Replaying games

So I have this weird issue with replaying games that I can't really explain. Whenever I beat a game that I really enjoyed. I find it hard to replay it. Even if it's been several months since I last touched it. I find that I have this issue mostly with games that are more linear like an fps or Jrpg. I can love the game to death but always feel odd replaying it, or just get incredibly bored after the first few minutes of playing it. It could be that I just get that way because I already know everything that's going to happen but heres the thing. I get like this with prequels to newer games as well. If I played a sequel to a game before its prequels I feel reluctant to play the older games.

So Escapists, is there anyone else that gets this way? it could be normal for all I know. I just wanted to get this out there.

On another note. What games do you love so much you can replay them endlessly and never get tired of them?

I've replayed every God of War (Save for III, about to start my second playthrough) numerous times.

I've also played Uncharted 2 quite a few times through, mainly because it's just so damn fun.

I don't normally replay games (At least not often,) but these have always made it hard not to play a few more times.

I have the same problem.
Because half of the game, story, characters, suspense, progression, is all out the window. (I guess progression isn't always) and your left with just the gameplay.

I know I've played oblivion twice through completely, and I normally if I wait long enough it's playable, but nothing compares to my first character, who I made mistakes on, got beat up on, but had the most fun with. (playing my third between Diablo II now)

I replay Eternal Darkness, The Longest Journey, Fallout and Goldeneye at least once a year. It's a very prestigious list.
I love playing Eternal Darkness every few years just to forget about it, only to have it blow my mind once again.

Really, Silicon Knights - make the bloody sequel!

With some games, I completely agree. Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War, Heavenly Sword and many others I can't name, but I could only bring myself to play them once, the second time even on a harder difficulty setting just didn't appeal to me.

Other games though, oh, Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Final Fantasy 8 (and 7 to some extent) Between them they easily have over 2000 hours, Dragon Age alone has cose to 400, Oblivion PS3/PC close to 400 Fallout 3 was my go to game for ages so easily 200, numbers of playthoughs I couldn't count.

When you find a game that resonates with you, it's really hard to stop playing it.

Not really.
Some examples for me are:
I've beaten Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 around 3-4 times each.
I've beaten KotOR 1 and 2 around a total of 80 times. (At least 40 for KotOR, I don't know how many for KotOR 2.)
Starcraft is a game I've played every weekend since it's release, and I play the campaign from time to time.
Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 (I beat Mass Effect once, then found ME2 to be far superior, so I played that.) are games I've beaten around 4-5 times each.

Well, I think this is normal. If I play a game that I've already beaten a couple of times I get bored within seconds. I also feel weird about buying games that are over a year old, and I don't understand why.
I could play Assassin's Creed 2 over a few times but not endlessly.

I liked Eternal Darkness, and I'd like a sequel, but I'm just afraid it won't live up to the previous one.
Which happens ALL THE FUCKING TIME TO THE SEQUELS I BUY.
Yeah.

Depends on the game.

I can think years back to playing Chrono Trigger through about 50 times. I did this until all my characters had ** in every stat (through tab collection.)

Or in the cases of Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve 2 where you just kept getting stronger and better with every play-through.

....dammit, now I think I want to play Parasite Eve

(Off-Topic: Give me a Parasite Eve 3, dammit!)

Yeah.
I'm just getting tired of the anticipation.

The "Eternal Darkness - Sanity's Redemption" sanity effect flashed in front of me so many goddamn times that I pretty much had to convince myself that they were making one.
(Which was foolish to think, as anyone who advertises for their sequel to a new IP while in that very same new IP is a bloody fool.)

But, hey, if it does come out, let's pray they don't cock it up.

I don't have a problem replaying most older games it's the new ones I have trouble with. Probably because I've played them so recently.

A game series I loved every minute of is the Ace Attorney series, that game is fantastic. But it's now more like a test that you have a cheat sheet for and know all the answers beforehand, it makes it hard to go back to.

Just imagine the mind-exploding things they could do with sanity effects on today's systems...

Though since it isn't a brown, manly, FPS it'll probably sink like a rock.

Since, y'know, like 6 people actually played the original*
[sub]*Okay, I'm kidding, but Sanity's Requiem deserved WAYYYY more sales than it got.[/sub]

Though it is intriguing to think what they could do... Hmmm...

Games like Kotor and Dragon age are easier to replay because you can alter certain parts of the story. Even then I felt a little weird replaying Mass effect. I wasn't a huge fan of that game anyway so I guess it's not that big a deal.

I only have trouble replaying a game if it doesn't have anything new to offer the second time through, especially if its story was the most important thing that it had going for it. That means JRPGs and point and click adventure games, mostly and even then, if the game has a variable plot and selectable characters as was the case with Maniac Mansion, I can still give it another go or two.

Without compelling gameplay to make up for the lack of surprises, I might as well be watching a movie and I rarely re-watch those.
