Report: Microsoft Details Next Xbox In May

Come May 21, Microsoft will finally offer prospective customers solid information on the upcoming successor to the Xbox 360.

At least, that's the word according to The Verge - and more specifically, to noted Windows expert Paul Thurrott. Thurrott, who has long been a major figure in tech news (particularly news relating to Microsoft), recently revealed [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01qrzaZg7_g#t=54m44] that the firm would be moving the Xbox event it had planned for late April to May 21.

Digging deeper, The Verge tapped anonymous sources who claim that the event will be held at a small venue (likely open only to select members of the press and possibly special guests) and will focus solely on spreading word of the next console's technical capabilities and what the company has planned for the machine.

Further, The Verge claims that Microsoft will then hold a larger event at this summer's E3 conference in which it will properly debut the system to a large (well, "larger" anyway) audience.

While we're couching our terms here with clear designations of where they came from, know that we're just performing due diligence. We have no reason to believe that either Thurrott or The Verge is mistaken, and everything they came up with squares with what we know about the next Microsoft console.

Now that we more or less have a date on which all of the mysteries of the Xbox 361 will be revealed, that only leaves us about a month and a half in which to speculate on the technological wonders Microsoft has in store. 4K resolution? Headset-free virtual reality? Sexy anthropomorphisms of both genders to cater equally to whatever a user's filthy kinks might be? Hit the comments and see if you can add anything less likely.

If the 'always online' rumours are true, I wonder how Microsoft will spin it to make it sound as less damaging as possible.

With only a month to go I'm afraid the always on thing may be locked in if true with no way to remove it at this point.

I really can't see this ending well if the rumors are true.

The good news, they are all rumors, the bad news, they are all consistent.

Still, I don't believe them, why? Because they are ALL bad rumors. Think about it, has anything about the next xbox been good? That raises quite an eyebrow from me.

Anyway, can't wait to finally put to rest this shit.

I'm interested to see, but then who will buy it?

Parents won't because they're afraid of it spying on their kids and crap.

Enthusiasts like those around here won't because we aren't that stupid and we're much more aware of shifts in the market and the way digital distribution through Steam, GOG, Green Man Gaming and such is making PC a more friendly and viable thing for the masses.

So, what, the frat houses? Can you sustain a permanently online console that requires 24-7 monitoring and servers on selling COD and Madden alone? Because I don't really think you can.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out but I'm moving away from microsoft more each day. I'm even playing with ubuntu to replace windows once the gaming scene improves on it.

Yeah at least with the PS4 the bad rumours were rare and didn't have many good sources and we at least got interesting stuff like mumblings about some form of social and touch stuff...

That either of the next gen consoles will actually function as well as a low end PC.
Hah.

For how long though? A year or two?

From the PS4 specs and a rough idea of what the tech is the memory is gonna be the first thing to start throttling the new consoles, the APU in the PS4 is likely pretty good for a budget.

If memory serves, did an Xbox guy not say that no one would care for the Sony event? That consumers don't care for news like that or something similar or is it just a fabric of my imagination?

Are companies beginning to "forget" what they say in the past when things go sour or am I just looking too deep into it.?(EA's DRM)

Do caramel encrusted sausage cookies exist or am I asking too many questions?

I bet it will be backwards compatible with the PS3. Or maybe it doesn't play games at all?

The way Microsoft talks about their consoles at E3 and the like, you'd think that was actually the case.

"No no, It's not a games console! It's a Media hub for all your Facebook and Twitter needs!"

"But sir! What about people who buy consoles for games and who don't use facebook or twitter?"

I hear it'll have a built in espresso machine!
At this point, not even the combination espresso machine AND muffin button would make me consider it.
I bet they'd charge MS-points or some sort of microtransaction per espresso and muffin made, and the machine will shut them off if it loses connection for more than 3 minutes.

Half-baked muffins. Yuck.

The thing that makes me more worried about these rumours is that Microsoft don't seem to be putting much efforts into debunking them.

In fact, what we tend to get from the various outlets is "So, what?".

Anyone remember the days when all your console did was play the disc you put inside it? Or when a DVD playback function made it a must-have purchase? I want those simple days back.

The only thing I care about is whether or not it can make me a sandwich play games damn it!

I'll wait until the official specs but I'm probably rooting for Sony next generation. I owe Microsoft nothing any more.

does anybody else wonder if all these rumors are just a publicity stunt to get everybody focused on the console reveal?

My optimistic perspective is that Microsoft will unveil the console, go "Hey! Look! It isn't 'always-online!'" and everyone will be so happy they ignore its weaknesses and flaws. My cynical perspective is that Microsoft knows its 'always-online', doesn't care what we think, and knows they are going market to people who won't understand what that means.

It turns out that Gabe Newell was lying about how he disliked Windows 8 and that the next "steambox" is an integrated part of the new console. Boom, DRM justified. And then they announce Half Life 3. The Durango sells millions.

actually, from what we've been told, you can use the network to spy on what your children are playing
