Report: Nintendo's New Console Set for Q2 2016 Release

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1012/1012261.png

This console generation has been tough on Nintendo, with a newer project, the Nintendo NX.

The rumors have been numerous and the actual news has been scant, but according to Digitimes' earlier report from sources that forecast a July 2016 release.

Although not a promise, this could mean that we could be sitting at home with a brand new console in less than six months. Alongside the distribution of NX dev kits this year, the company is definitely making power moves for 2016.

Is this enough to compete with the PS4 markets? Only time will tell.

huh that seems early considering that would make it come out about the same time as e3 maybe earlier. For something like a new system we usually have a year before hand to hype it up but we've head almost no official news from Nintendo.

This doesn't sound right. They would've announced it by now if it were coming out in July. Unless they're trying to pull a Sega Saturn and announce it the same day it launches, because I guess that worked so well for Sega back in the '90s.

P.S. Thanks

Well, it's not a report, it's a rumor for one. Digitimes even says so. So saying its a report is, well, wrong.

This seems wrong, nothing from Nintendo on this at all and from what I've found Digitimes is the sole source on this news, saying they have inside info and all. Other sites that don't cite Digitimes label it as a rumor and a Forbes article recently popped up saying it seems suspicous farfetched. Also different websites are saying both Q1 and Q2 dates. Which is true? If either even are that is? I guess we'll see.

Wouldn't that be a a kind of a FU to the people who brought the Wii U by getting new console for you to buy so soon plus having to admit that the PS4 and Xbox One are too much for them to handle? Plus Nintendo would never keep a secret like this with such a short time to announce and hype a new console

I highly doubt it?d be that early. Looking back at Nintendo?s announcements and releases for their consoles, it?s usually over a year between the two. Wii U was announced in April 2011, released November 2012. The Wii was announced in 2004, released November 2006. Gamecube was announced August 2000, and released November 2001. So unless Nintendo changes their announcement/release tradition, I suspect a 2017 release realistically.

We haven?t even had a true announcement about the NX from Nintendo, just an investor statement basically saying the name.

The issue with the Saturn wasn't that they announced the release day on the release day. The issue was that they'd told others (Game Devs, stores) that the release was going to be in...October, I want to say, and then released it in July, at E3. As long as stores and Devs are prepared, announcing the release day on the release day wouldn't cause a Saturn.

But we still don't know what the NX is. We don't know its name, we don't know if it's a handheld, home console or, hybrid, we don't know who is developing what on it. We haven't really got any hard data on it other than 'it exists and is being made by Nintendo'. If it's truly going to launch early/mid next year than I would expect for more information on the thing to be out at this point. Unless of course Nintendo is going to launch their own Saturn.

I'm not saying they won't release *something* in sixth months, but if it's a flagship console or handheld, I'll eat my hat. I mean, 6 months out, any only one site has any info. No dev leaks, no "teehee, we shouldn't talk about " from anybody?

I'll be charitable and say that Digitimes is taking an inch and going for the moon.

Why would they officially announce a new console right before the Christmas holiday season? you wait to after so as not to affect the current consoles sales as even if they are already very low there is no point in making them worse.

This is an unsupported rumor that sounds unlikely for various reasons. For one, Nintendo would be keeping a console launch secret some 6 months before the actual launch. That and Nintendo would be ditching the wii u alltogether for a new project this quickly?! They might but I'd like to see why they'd believe their new system to sell much better.

Or, y'know, it's just a bullshit rumor made by an outlet desperate for attention, especially since Nintendo has reiterated time and time again that the system is being REVEALED in 2016, not released. It amazes me how many times bs rumors ignore reality.

I'm smelling a big steaming pile here. Quarter 4 of 2016 sounds possible, but I wouldn't put money on it. Releasing something as major as what the NX rumors and details suggest would be pretty risky. Nintendo already got some harsh criticism for the Wii U's (lack of) advertising. If they really did push it out by June, they had better flood the world with ads. There is also the recent rumor that the devs kits were just shipped to third parties. That doesn't sound like a launch is half a year away.

And honestly, I'd rather see one more year for the Wii U. It's two big titles for this shopping season got delayed. If more secret projects are revealed, it might have enough ammo to go out with a bang.

Eh, I'm not so convinced. They could be getting ready to release it, and I would like to see a new console sooner rather than later, but it's also faulty to not tell us anything about it, any potential games or even what the actual console is going to be like.

Yeah, I don't think they're going to bury the Wii U that fast, considering they still have to get Star Fox out of the way first.

I doubt that. Maybe Q2 2017. That would make sense, but not 2016 at all. In the last direct they even announced that Zelda U is exclusive for the WiiU, unlike what happened with Twilight Princess. If they did plan to release the NX before Zelda, they wouldn't be saying exclusively.

Are they planning to bring the surprise at the E3?
Nintendo's E3 2016 presentation: "Here is our new console. It will be available tomorrow."

How ironic would it be if Nintendo, long-time rival of Sega, fell into the EXACT same trap?

Frankly, it pisses me off that Nintendo is already launching a new console. As an early Wii U adopter, I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for a new Zelda game... and now it probably won't get one at all. Honestly, I like the Wii U's library, I play it about as often as I play my Xbox One, but after spending so much on the console itself, $40 for three Wiimotes, and fucking $50 a pop for the pro controllers, I've invest far too much in a system that Nintendo has pretty much every of allowing to die. FFS, we couldn't even get a physical copy of Fatal Frame 5.

And just as it happened with Sega, so now shall it happen to Nintendo. They have proven that they cannot be trusted to make a home game console. Whatever this NX bullshit ends up being, I'll be staying far, far away from it.

That was Covarr's point. Sega's console market failure is very well documented. Many people on these forums have been saying that Nintendo is mirroring the 90s era of Sega. The console after the NX will likely be Nintendo's best console and by that point no one will care.
