Well, if this is true, it means that microsoft is copying nintendo......again.

I really dont see the problem with this, sure theres a touchscreen, but if the rumor is true then it will have buttons and analogue sticks and all the things you like about a controller along with it. As long as its more of a supplementary feature rather than the main mechanic im cool with it

Lol if true. As much flak as Nintendo can get sometimes they do come up with some pretty kick-ass stuff.

Quite frankly I think the touchscreen is a great idea to add for the next generation of controller. Think of any game with an inventory system... touchscreen... BAM. It'll still have control sticks and buttons for a more traditional gaming style too for games that wouldn't make good use of it.

Copying? Who knows how long this idea was in the works at Microsoft before Nintendo released the design of the Wii U controllers?

To be honest, this looks like a good innovation. A touchscreen can add a new functionality to a controller that an extra set of buttons would be hard pressed to emulate (if you'd excuse the pun) Consider how much the touchscreen has advanced since the release of the Xbox 360 back in 2005. It seems like a pretty intuitive thing to include as standard in the next generation of consoles.

Can't tell if trolling or serious.

OT: I would have thought that would be more Apple's thing to do, but, okay, if Microsoft want to keep chasing after real industry leaders and losing money on the Xbox, it's not my place to intervene.

Can't tell if passive-aggressive or serious. You shouldn't jump to conclusions based on hearsay.

Besides, I stand by my original point (which I note you've conveniently lopped off the bottom of your quote) that touchscreens have already become integrated into many areas of technology. The Nintendo DS was a runaway success, and I don't see why trying to follow that trend in the mainstream console market is a necessarily bad thing. Nintendo have a huge revenue share in the casual market, and if Microsoft want to gain ground in that area, allowing for increased functionality in the controllers to widen the range of games that could be made for the platform is a step in the right direction.

If the controller is the size of the Vita and not larger than a tablet like the Wii U controller then it might be quite a good feature.

I refuse to buy a console with a gimmick controller unless it's under 200 dollars. Even that it would also be games where touch screen is optional I would buy. Then again I have a deep seated dislike for touch screens since in youth used a labtop with awful touch mouse and grade school had awful labtops as well.

Can I just briefly point out, completely separately of the whole touch screen/motion control good/bad thing, that the wii u controller looks ridiculously poorly optimized in regards to ergonomics. It's a bloody rectangle for christ's sake!! I thought we'd learned that was uncomfortable and obnoxious several console generations ago! Am I alone on this?

Slightly more on topic:

I'm slightly worried about the neck pains I'm going to be developing if all major consoles have controllers which force me to go back and forth between the screen and the controller throughout gameplay. I hope at least one of the two remaining companies keeps controllers which don't require constant tinkering and attention to communicate my commands to the screen with the least interference, which personally is what I thought controllers were for. So yeah, not sold on the whole idea: pretty gimmicks do not a good product make.

Do we need this? No.

It's like the damned kinnect.
I want a normal controller, or I am staying with keyboard and mouse!

Wait, do you mean if it had a normal controller and it was over $200 you would buy it. With the way that pick looked, it seems like it's just like a normal controller with a touch screen built in, not a completely new design like the Nintendo one. I don't think they price they listed was that ridiculous. I bought a PS3 when they first came out and I remember that being in the range of $600.

Why does everyone say everything is copied from Nintendo? What innovative thing have they done?

Analog stick? Several consoles had analog controls before them

Touch screen games? That was done before them too.

Motion controls? Nope Xavix beat them to that as well, all the way to the 'wii fit board'

Either way this sounds like it could be interesting but now the controllers are going to be even more expensive. I mean 35 was the original xbox controllers then 40-50, now it'll be what 75 each?

Because the report says they are still experimenting with the idea. Which means it hasn't been in the works.

They're not idiots. I'm sure if they're working on a touchscreen controller, it'd be a functional one.

How does anyone really know this information? Guys, nobody even knows if it'll be called the 720, let alone what kind of controllers it'll have. This is not a report, it's a rumor. Just because the magazine title sounds official doesn't make it any less rumor worthy.

That picture of what they think it might look like is so awful, haha. I hate this idea, just drives prices up, ugh. Dreamcast did a screen on the controller YEARS ago, from what I heard people liked it back then, it just seems like a pointless gimmick in my eyes, touch screens are stupid (says the guy who owns an iPhone).

Supporting some kind of touch screen controller seems like an absolute no-brainer. Touch screens are ubiquitous and millions of people are familiar with them. Plus, there are definitely implementations for core games that haven't been explored yet. There's no reason they should just be used in the casual realm.

Imagine having a standard controller that also has a touch screen with your inventory, map and journal on it for an RPG. It'd be pretty handy.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft is trying to make it so you can't play with your friends, at home. This is going to jack up the prices for controllers so much.

Agree 100%

I'll be really pissed if they ditch the ergonomically perfect 360 controller for something stupid.

Fair enough that you think this is them copying Nintendo, but... "Copying nintendo......again?" How have they done this already?
