I can see it now. I'll be playing a game of LoL in my usual incompetent way,and the hate filled veterans on the other side of the screen will be able to pull a Harbinger on me, and actually make me brutally murder myself.

A whole new era of griefing is coming people.

Oh no, in an ever escalating arms race between nerds and bullies, the nerds are finally inching ahead with what will inevitably become the perfect "Why you hitting yourself?" move.

But seriously, this is cool. We'll just have to see what kind of applications actually come out of this.

Interesting. However, I'm not entirely worried about full-on mind control just yet.

While they were able to induce actions in the test subject, they didn't say anything about PREVENTING him from acting on his own. Even if this were significantly expanded-upon, it's entirely likely that a fully-conscious mind would be able to resist it.
yep this, it'll be interesting to see them do a trial run on having someone think mentally very hard about a certain task and have that other person trying to resist OR do something else, and to see what happens and if it affects either of them.

also, i wonder how/if this can be used across species, such as mind control on a mofuckin whale so it can eat thousands of fish into it's mouth then spit them out onto my barge for mass profits.

All of you people are way to hopeful.

Surrogates. People hiring people to be their avatar? LOL.

Here comes Syndicate baby! A rich dude on a plain will be steering around deathdroids in the street blowing up rival companies within 20 years from now.

You know, I involuntarily twitch a lot of the time. It's not because of other people thinking about me doing it, though.

...or... is it?

I think the most apt comparison would be the 2009 film 'Gamer' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamer_(film)] starring Gerald Butler, where people's bodies are controlled by other people, and not Surrogates.

I was aware that brain-waves could be read through one's skull and that brain activity can be inhibited using a magnet, but I didn't know that brain stimulation could occur non-invasively with a magnetic coil. I had always thought one would have to insert an electrode directly into someone's brain to do that, but admittedly I know next to nothing about the subject.
Very interesting.

Heh. There are no voices in your head. There is only the obedience of the flesh.

Stepping out of the land of paranoia, w00t! Video games being used to further science! The ability to use the Internet to transcend physical limitations! All we need now is the means of uploading our personalities and we can dispense with these pesky bodies and move on to more interesting things.

This is great news, whatever about human interface for people who are missing limbs this could prove to be invaluable with artificial limbs

So, which vision of the future will this lead to? Place your bets for...
A) Gamer.
B) Surrogates. or
C) Ghost in the Shell
D) Accel World

I want brain to brain communication, not mind control.

For the record, the Colbert Report already perfected this technology.

I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually, though...

I want to mind control people :-( When will this be mass-marketed and will I be able to transmit my wishes for world domination to my army of mindless drones?

Also, forget multi-boxing. Try multi-slave controlling!

You know, im not to surprised about this. Basically they are just recording the activity from Person A and sending it to a mechanism that stimulates the person of brain B physically. Kinda like doctors and checking your reflexes, they just pop the hammer on a sweet spot and there goes your limb.

EDIT: Im talking about the concept, not the technology.

What I DO find intriguing is the potential this could serve for Surrogates-style robotic replacements.
I heard a report on this on the radio last night, and they interviewed the guy on the receiving end of the signal. He described it as an unconscious twitch, akin to blinking - something you only realize you've done after you've done it, which I found interesting.

You may well be right that if he was actively trying to stop himself from doing it, he might be able to, but you never know - this unconscious stuff can be funny like that.

Very cool stuff, all the same! :)

And so it begins....

Now i really really really want to trasnfer myself from this flail flesh body into a immortal machine i could control.

This is just a crude prototyle that seems to work inconsistently (first experiment), but most prototypes are. i see this as a great step forward.

Exactly this thing was suggested as a hypothetical experiment in the book Genome by Matt Ridley - back in the 90s. 20 years later it is a reality.
