So I decided to load up the original Left 4 Dead the other day. I downloaded the update when it asked and started playing. Go to check my achievements and:

Zombie Genocidist: 1 / 53,595.

Rage...

I had somewhere in the region of 48,000 kills towards this achievement, I could never be bothered to properly sit and rack up kills for it, I was just going to get it when I got it, and now this.

So anyway, has an achievement or trophy ever been reset for you? What did you do about it?

I've half a mind to walk up to everyone in Valve and or Microsoft and twat them round the face.

Chances are I had a few TF2 achievements reset when I did a fresh install a few months back to clear out junk files left over from old updates and random servers running modded files, but it didn't really bother me, since I don't pay much attention to the achievements, and at the time I didn't use any unlocks in my primary class. I now use the Holy Mackerel instead of the bat, but that's because it's just a goofy model and skin with the same stats as the original bat.

I can see how this would be incredibly annoying if I were the sort of person who really cared about achievements, or if there was something akin to Gamerscore attached to the Steam version for that matter. Which version of the game were you using? Because I know that deleting on the Steam version of TF2, the finished achievements are stored in the Steam Cloud, but the in-progress ones are stored locally, meaning that deleting the wrong file can take away all of your progress. I'd imagine the L4D series works the same way, since it runs on the same engine and uses the same platform for its achievements.

This was on the 360, and I don't know where the progress for them is stored. All I know is the same thing happened to my friend when he updated the game, but he's now on 600 or so kills.

That sucks mate. But onto my story.
I had got the GOTY edition Oblivion Elder Scrolls and had precoded to get one character to master of every group. He was the lead assassin, thief, fighter, arena master, mage and was the ruler of one of the expansions. He was the most badass thing ever with all the groups loving him. Anyways, I went on one day to play him and he was gone. So I decided, oh well, I can just make another one and now that I have the achievements, I don't need to grind all that anymore. Ya, the achievements weren't all reset-only random ones were. So it said I was a master of the mage tower, but I didn't have the apprentice achievement. Needless to say, I broke the game disc and raged.

Not really an achievement, but my Pokemon Gold was reset when I was something like 90% done with it. I only really remember my super ho-oh and my super gyarados now...

I have owned a 360 only for 3 months. Achievements are new to me, and I wish I could turn them off. If they were in-game and worth anything, sure. But the way it's handled is just stupid.

Must be frustrating for you, though.
It would be nice if your Gamer Score was worth anything - like freebies from Microsoft or something. It would be nice to receive something in return for buying and playing a crap-ton of games.

Then I have no idea what happened, although my guess would be that valve accidentally cleared whatever the equivalent is to the file in question with the application of the update. That really sucks, I'm sorry it happened.

It was definitely not needless to say that you broke the disc. This isn't exactly aimed at you, but what is it with gamers and anger problems? I've never damaged my equipment because a game made me mad, but I see both of my roommates doing it on occasion. When this kind of thing is so common, is it any wonder that gamers have a bad reputation?

'Twas a joke. I wouldn't ever hurt my stuff because I get too attached. I just threw it into my "never play again" pile, although I want to get it for PC because of the mods :/

Have you ever played through a Tony Hawk's game? I'm pretty sure there is some form of correlation between becoming rage-induced whilst playing a game and having played a Tony Hawk's game. Those suckers will drive you crazy! =P

That makes me feel much better, at least in this case. Sadly, gamers in general do angrily break stuff on a fairly regular basis. I don't know how my roommate keeps himself in 360 controllers; he seems to damage one just enough for a button to stop working every couple of months, and his case isn't exactly uncommon...

I know what you mean. My brother constantly breaks our controllers and then forces me to use them. Sometimes it's just a button is unresponsive, but sometimes the whole thing is broken in half. It pisses me off.

OT: Just went on RE5 and saw that all my achievements were reset...I had every single one >:|

I've only ever played demos and multiplayer of the Tony Hawk games, so I can't really judge how angry it makes people. I can say that I Wanna be the Guy was incredibly frustrating, but I just turned the game off and played something else instead. It's much more productive than breaking expensive equipment. :p Frankly, I'd be much angrier if my stuff was broken than any game could make me. And I think we should probably make another thread if we want to discuss this further -- this is rapidly approaching thread hijack status.

I'm pretty sure for the longest time my Pyromancer and Chief of Staff achievements in Team Fortress 2 wouldn't register. For those of you who don't know what those achievements require, it means racking up 1,000,000 fire damage/heal points over the course of my TF2 career.

*shakes fist* Not helping, poor Internet connection.

Not as bad as what happened to me.

Earlier this year my I lent my friend my hard drive, but without me wanting, modded ALL the gamerscore I had accumulated truthfully over the past 2 and a half years. I ended up deleting that account, losing almost 3 years hard work and many time consuming and great achievements.

To this day I have never been able to start a new account properly.

EDIT: btw I had almost 30,000 GS.

Is that 30,000 you accumulated yourself or 30,000 that was hacked?

In a way the opposite happened to me. Some guy hacked my Steam account and played a bunch of Counter Strike (which I had barely played) and when I got my account back, it kept all the achievements he got me.

I would be a bit grateful if the virus that allowed this hadn't destroyed my old computer and hard drive.

my friend tried to cheat to get credits in Halo Reach, Microsoft banned him from Halo, and reset his GS. I should note, that he also used a program to get achvs and such.

But achievements add to your geekgamescore. Actually you are right they are pointless.

I have a friend who stacks his discs on top of each other and the back of them look disgusting. I know it's his stuff, but I get so angry when I see the state of the discs because he has all the cases. He always complains his disks won't work and I just want to slap him across the head. Also he throws his controllers all the time and his one controller is so broken you can see the inside of the controller and when it vibrates, the thing that moves hits your hand. So yes I hate playing video games with him.
