Resident Evil 5 Gets Versus Mode DLC

Angry with your RE5 co-op partner for not healing you when you were on the brink of death last game? Show them what for in the game's Versus Mode DLC, but be prepared to pony up some digi-dollars for it.

Friendly fire is optional in Resident Evil 5's co-op campaign, which should come as a relief to anyone tired of "hilarious" griefers in co-op games like Left 4 Dead. But come on, let's all fess up: it's fun to shoot your teammates in the face sometimes. For that, there'll be RE5's Versus mode, a four-player competitive multiplayer mode that'll be released as DLC post-launch and run you $4.99 on PSN and 400 MS Points on Xbox Live.

There are two modes in Versus. In Slayer's Rule, you compete with other players to see who can kill more enemies. The highest score at the end wins. The other mode, Survivor's Rule, is a team deathmatch mode where the goal, obviously, is to kill the other people. In either mode you can play as RE5 heroes Chris, Sheva and other "secret characters," which assuredly means that Wesker will be selectable.

Anyway, if you can get over the fact that we've gotten to the point where we have to pay for a competitive multiplayer mode, look for Versus some time "post-launch." That means expect it soon but not too soon, you never know. Capcom likes to be a tease about these things: they said the Street Fighter 4 still not out [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89210-Street-Fighter-4s-DLC-Bonanza].

YES! i LOVE paying for things that should come with the retail copy of the game! especially when those things seem so out of place for the title! I'm totally sold!

Five dollars for something that should already be in the game? YEY! All my worst fears of DLC come true! Slippery slope and all that jazz tells me that it's only a matter of time before co-op modes are only 4.99.

Well if you all will excuse me, I'm going to take up drinking and start ranting about the good ol' days while gamers are slowly nickled and dimed to death.

OK, DLC announced a day before release. That doesn't look like Capcom intended to have a versus mode all along, but decided to cut it so they could make more money after sales... not in the slightest.

Wow, if you're going to release a game mode that should be there to begin with as DLC, at least wait a few months so you can claim it wasn't ready and you couldn't delay the game.

How is this even meant to work? You stand still when you're shooting in Resi... It might devolve into a game of campers, especially if they make the maps too big.

Call me pessimistic, but in Resi5 I just don't think multiplayer will work. At least I don't have to pay for it if I don't want to.

I swear that I will never buy downloadable content.

I will try my best not to support any developers who'll stoop to such a level of greed and employ such brazenly dirty tricks to earn a few dollars more.

If I already bought the game I'm bound to get preeeetty ticked off when they announce that I've only got some of the game and I'll probably sell it while it retains some value. Games are expensive enough!

Damned money grubbing Capcom, this should have been in the game when it was released. Seems like this is the new trend with game companies now though.

Downloadable content isn't all bad. When it's say... GTA IV, Mass Effect, or Fallout 3 episodic content I fully support it. I'll even excuse new multiplayer maps if they convince me that the maps were actually made AFTER the game was released (as with Halo 2, Halo 3 didn't fool me at all, and the maps sucked).

This, however, is unforgivable. It makes me consider not buying the game at all, in fact.

I looked at the picture where wesker is holding a grenade launcher and aiming it at Chris - while Chris is aiming his little pistol to the right, probably thinking "If only I could strafe left just a little bit..." really makes me wish this wasn't going o be a $5.00 extra mode.

BTW - do you guys remember having to buy EXTRA DIFFICULTY LEVELS for Megaman 9? This is such a capcom thing to do now. I think the Japanese market eats this shit up.

That's rarely how it actually works. It's far more common for a feature to fall far enough behind that it needs to be cut due to time and resource constraints. Sometimes those features are picked back up after a title goes gold and the resources are freed up again. DLC is more likely to bring you modes post release that you would have never seen otherwise.

There are far less conspiracies in our industry than folks like to think, not that I don't derive my fair share of amusement from them.

On the topic of the DLC itself, I have great difficulty seeing the appeal of a competitive shooter that utilizes the tank-like controls of Resident Evil. When I picture that playing out, all I get is a mental dose of the ugly.

RollForInitiative - I wonder how headshots will work. Will it do the whole *AAAAAHHH MY FACE* and then require you to run up and use a "finishing move" on them, or just a regular - normal - headshot?

Naturally, it has to involve Quick Time Events in order to make it more difficult to properly kill somebody with a headshot, since the tank controls mean they'll just be...standing there.

I expect it to be more like a shooting range than a deathmatch.

Not even going into the fact that this seems to be something that should be included in release, why the hell do we need a versus mode in a Resident Evil game?

... Then again, I could've said the same about the co-op mode... even if it IS the logical progression of the two playable characters at once system of Resident Evil 0.

Only people with more money then sense would buy this.

I know we all want to play additional content and not miss out on it but if we keep supporting this type of corporate behaviour, at what point does it stop?

Also "The Bandit", Mass Effect DLC on the PC was free. As it should be.

Uh... a deathmatch mode in a Resident Evil game?! The Hell? Now they've crossed the line, this is not Resident Evil anymore. No zombies, not scary, and now multiplayer shootouts! They should rename the game to something else and just drop the pretense already.

Capcom only seems to be trying to get more money out of its' customers.
First, having to pay for costumes on Street Fighter IV where it would have been more fun trying to unlock them, instead of having to buying them.
I don't really see how a RE5 deathmatch could work, since you can't run and shoot like you can in your common FPS, you're just going to get campers waiting for someone to walk past.

Good point. But if that's the case then it should be free, along the lines of what Valve did with Counter Strike:Source.
On release the game was missing several maps as well as the extra player models it was 'meant' to have, they just got added as time passed for free.
Gaming seems to be the only industry where you can release an unfinished (or underfinished) product and get away with it.
