Resident Evil 7 Will Return to Survival Horror Roots

According to Capcom, future Resident Evil games will narrow their focus to better appeal to core fans.

Resident Evil has never been the most widely-played videogame franchise, but it certainly has a loyal and dedicated fanbase. Trouble is, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9950-Resident-Evil-6-Review>you wouldn't know that from looking at Resident Evil 6, which was widely panned by reviewers and long-time fans alike. For many, the biggest problem with Resident Evil 6 was that the game moved too far from its survival horror roots, dropping the tense, resource-focused gameplay in favor of run-and-gun action. While that's only part of the problem (<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10176-Dead-Space-3-Review>other survival horror franchises didn't make that transition so poorly), Capcom has heard the message, and has promised to rededicated future sequels to Resident Evil's core fans.

"We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response," said former Capcom marketing head Michael Pattison. "There was some great positives out of that, but it was a mixed bag, as we saw from the review scores. We have got to take that on-board, we can't ignore that, and we have to take that onto the next game when we make the next Resident Evil."

One of the biggest differences between Resident Evil 6 and previous games was its three separate story campaigns, each of which embodied a different tone and gameplay style. While that's certainly an interesting idea on paper, in practice it fractured the game to a point where many players were confused about what Resident Evil 6 was supposed to be. "With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there," Pattison continues, "there were comments from consumers that said it felt bloated. The Leon missions went down very well, and because we did Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS, there was a cry out for us to focus our attention on survival horror, rather than be too many things to all people. You'll find where we go next will likely be more targeted at our core fanbase."

i wouldn't believe capcom understands what the concept of horror is any more considering the last two games have been anything but horror

maybe capcom should work on a new horror franchise instead of reanimating the husk of a dead horse

Perhaps if Capcom tried that in the first place, their games would have been better recieved... still. The way they treat Megaman and Breath of Fire these days, I've lost any faith in them.

If they could just make a game that felt like the original and REmake. The original control scheme can be optional but I prefer it personally.
They just can't seem to make a game that doesn't have an ass-load of QTE's and tons of explosions any more :/

EDIT: As a side note, Resident Evil 2 worked with 2 different characters and 4 ways to play so the multiple story line route isn't fundamentally a problem.

well wanna add a bit more

the typical marketing strategy for these big companies seems to go like this

release series that eventually flops because it either went too assassins creed or call of duty (the same thing with little added or too bro)

they then release "oh we'll fix it up next time we're going back to basic" and then release essentially another game with game x stamped on it

we've seen it with red alert, duke nukem, etc, etc

so faith in capcom or any other long running franchise is incredibly low for me

Well thats what the "Edit" button is for.

OT: Aside from this being a confirmation of Resident Evil 7, i wouldnt believe its got actual horror in it until its actually out and we have the verdict from reliable review sites.

I see Capcom hasn't fixed their compulsive lying to fans. Resident evil's name is losing value with every crappy game they release.

Hell Operation Racoon City and RE6 pretty much killed any confidence I had left in Capcom

Why does there even need to be a Resident Evil 7?
What good will milking an already barren cow do?
Let the property rest. Capcom obviously has no clue what to do with it anyway. It's not like any of the previous games, barring 4, were any good to begin with.

Why are they even trying? Capcom, you want to know why RE4 was considered the best? IT WASN'T EVEN TRYING TO BE SCARY. It was being oh so silly! Do that, you can't do horror.

Yeah, hsven't they been saying this for years though? They say that their next game will be a return to the series' roots and then, after release they defend it as it it actually did when it clearly didn't. They then go through a period of soul searching and admit they were wrong and then promise the next one will do better. It's sort of like Nintendo hardware and 3rd party developers at this point.

Well, Revelation was a step in the right direction. I just hope they can make something as good as the first ones or as good as RE4 if it has to be action.

And then there was the whole Devil may Cry Debacle...

Only Capcom game aside from the DMC HD collection i bought recently was the original Dragons Dogma when it came out, and that was only because it was an interesting new IP. However, I'm done with Capcom for now and i don't think i'll be going back unless they get their shit together.

I feel like the damage has been done...

Revelations (on 3DS) was good, but not in terms of story or characters...and Capcom has squeezed every ounce of juice out of the RE4 style by now so ANOTHER RE4 style game would be pushing it pretty far...

They need to do something new for RE if they want anyone to play it, if you ask me...

It's roots weren't good to begin with. What they need to improve on is the writing and gameplay. ESPECIALLY the writing.

Actions speak far louder than words, and Capcom has a lot to prove to fans - especially since they said the exact same thing about the last game, too.

So I'll wait and see what happens.... but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

I remember them saying that about 6 as well.

But some people won't be satisfied no matter what you do. Might as well appeal to the ones that made you great.

6, however, didn't appeal to anyone.
I do remember that as well, and that is why this seems so empty to me. I wonder if anyone at Capcom even knows what they are doing anymore, other than poor Yoshinori Ono, who seems to be the last cool person Capcom has not gotten around to firing or pushing out of the company yet.
