4 is my favorite but its not really a "Resident Evil" game in that its not as survivally.
I could go on all day on how good 4 is but just take my word for it.

2 and 3 are good, I don't really remember the rest except 5. If you've played 4 you've played 5 - except 5 isn't as good... unless you've got a friend to play with.

Well 2 and 4 stand head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion. If your looking for a scary RE well the only remotely scary ones are 1/REmake, the lost in nightmares expansion for re5 and 3. But I can tell you which REs to avoid. Stay away from the gun survivor series and gaiden.

I'd say Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and Code veronica X as these are the ones i own and found the most fun out of the series.

Resi 0 i haven't played enough to give a verdict.

Survivor was ok from what i remember, haven't played it in years.

outbreak 1 & 2 are disappointments.

Umbrella chronicles and darkside chronicles are rail shooters that mees around with the timelines of the first three games and then some.

Avoid Resident Evil Zero. Neither playable character is very likable and it doesn't expand on the story of Resident Evil, just raises more questions and opens plot holes.

Don't play the original Resident Evil. The dialogue is atrocious and the controls are a mess. Play the Gamecube remake instead. The dialogue is less atrocious and the controls incorporate improvements from later titles.

RE2 is decent, since its where the developers hit their stride. RE3 is more of the same, but since it takes place before and after RE2, there are plot holes when both are taken together.

Code: Veronica, in gameplay terms, is average. Some of the most annoying characters are in this one.

Dead Aim is a light-gun with only tangential relations to the main series. The developers weren't allowed to use existing RE characters.

Gaiden is a crappy Game Boy Color spinoff.

RE4 is where things take off. The tank controls and fixed camera were dropped for a little more action. The dialogue's still cheesy.

RE5 could have been better than 4. Same controls, significantly different inventory system. Cartoonish supervillain. Complete. Global. SATURATION. Rockpunching. Partner AI is dumb as a post.

if you are looking for one that doesn't take much hassle to get, just go for #4. Its fairly far off from the original story and is a lot more accurate and fun when it comes to combat. I haven't played five though, but as everyone has said, it is fairly bad.

off-topic: I find it odd that I find this thread right after getting done playing a session of #4...

The only RE games I've played are 4 and 5. Oh, and a bit of 2, though that was years ago and I couldn't play it, so I didn't get very far.
4 is really good (as good as others are saying).
I doubt I could play RE5 on my own, but its one of the best co-op games I can think of. Its a great laugh on split-screen.

I think the best games are (and this is just my opinion):

Resident Evil 4 - A few scares and better game play compared to the older instalments.

Resident Evil 5 - Not really any scares, but enjoyable game play and lots of fun with a co-op partner in split screen, but the partner AI is horrible.

Resident Evil The Mercenaries - An extremely fun game especially if you can pick it up cheap. There's a lot more content than people give it credit for.

Resident Evil Revelations - Probably the best resident Evil game to date, with quite a few scares. The best game play so far, and a brilliant atmosphere and great co-op mode.

I think 1 through 5 plus Code Veronica and the Outbreak series are good. So, that's about 8 total. Four and five are totally different from the "norm," sure, but they're still good. Just don't expect them to be heavy on the horror because they're not. They're still fun, though.

In my opinion: 1-3, Code Veronica. 4's okay I guess but the earlier games were better and more fun, plus I actually liked the overall plot, so it being shoved onto a tangent in 4 was not what I was after.

My recommendation as a long time Resident Evil fan goes like this:
Resident Evil 1 (But dear god find some way. ANYWAY! to get your hands on the remake)
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3(there's one that will keep you on your toes)
Coder Veronica
AAAaand 4 (took the series in a bold new direction and despite what some say I found it to be quite disturbing and atmospheric and a great deal of fun)

1-3 are the best. 4 is only considered good by people who do not like survival horror and instead prefer generic action games.
Not at all.

Have you played any of the "classic" Resident Evil games lately? It's probably one of the worst cases of aging a video game has ever done.

There isn't any "survival horror" in the games. It's just run past the baddies because you realize not one of them is fast enough to catch up to you.

Most of them.
They may be really, really dated, but I still like the older ones. Fr those, I'd say to stick with 1 (or any of its remakes), 2, 3, and Code: Veronica.
For the newer style... 4. Just 4, so far.

I personally like all of them, well, at leased all the ones that I played, which would be all the main series ones and the two Wii rail shooters.

As for what you would like, it depends. If you like a true survival horror experience, with limited ammo, health items, and clunky controls, then any of the RE games between 1 and Code Veronica would be a great experience. As for 4 and 5 the only people that I know of who don't like at leased one of those are classic RE fanatics who won't accept a change in gameplay. But since you don't have any attachment to old school RE mechanics, that won't be a problem for you.

All, but if you want order of best in my opinion...
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 2 (personal favorite, but I like the controls more in 4)
Resident Evil Revelations
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles
Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil the Mercenaries 3D
Resident Evil 5 (definitely the worst in the series that I have played)
I haven't played 3, Code Veronica, 1 REmake, 0, Gaiden, Survivor, Dead Aim, and Outbreak Files 1 and 2.

Well I'm gonna say it ..

OUTBREAK (and Outbreak File 2)

If you were ever lucky enough to play it multiplayer ... goddamn. #5 had the multiplayer element, but was, sadly, about as scary as Blue's fucking Clues. What's that? A big zombie? Well I'll just use *six* of the grenades I happen to carry. If that doesn't work, I'll just unload 60 automatic rounds into him. Pfft.

The multiplayer of Outbreak was great. You had back up .. but Jesus it was still scary. That damned wormy-thing in the hospital ? #5 was basically a 3-hr action version of that map.

EDIT: And some one the endings were a bit more poignant that anything else in RE. I remember playing through the Raccoon City University map on Outbreak (file 1). Found a cure for the T-Virus, chased by a Tyrant throughout the university accompanied by a waitress, a subway driver, and myself (a plumber); our waitress friend was ripped in half by the Tyrant. Myself and the subway driver fought a desperate battle against the Tyrant. We're not soldiers. We're not international men of mystery (with 'Danger' as our middle names!). I'm a plumber, and he's a train driver. WTF are we gonna do against a Tyrant ? We won ... but were too late. Ourselves, and the T-Virus antigen, were obliterated in the nuclear strike that wiped Raccoon City off the map.

My favorite is the remake of RE1 on the gamecube and wii. It really is the definitive resident evil game; it's perfect. RE0, RE2 and RE3 are equally good. RE4, while waaaay different from the rest of the series, is a damn good game. I can't speak for RE5 though. I bought it for xbox360 and just could NOT get the controls down, which is weird because I've beaten RE4 on gamecube about 10 times lol.

Much like call of duty, 4 is the only resident evil game you should play unless you are a fan of the Genre. Come to think of it, much like Star Trek movies, the even numbered ones seem to be the best ones (from what I've heard anyway).

I really only like 4 and 5 to be honest.
Excited about 6 since it looks like an even better 4 but I just don't like the survival horror controls.
To stiff and just... bleh. It's always boring and people don't bloody move like that!!!!
