Being a teenager, I often get in arguments with adults and people much older than me. However, it seems the most common thing said to me is that I should respect them for being older, or I can't yell at them because I'm not an adult and they are. What's your opinion on this?

I personally believe that regardless of age, respect needs to be earned, and should never be given due to how long someone's been on this Earth. I may try to act polite, but that doesn't mean they deserve my respect when they insist on acting like asses.

I share your pain. I think one should always be polite to one's elders (given they don't give one a reason not to be so polite), but respect should only go to those who earn it.

Especially when it's exceedingly obvious that they either know nothing of what they're talking about or their opinion is simply outdated.

Generally someone with age is more experienced at life, and so has grown wiser in their age.

Sometimes they don't though.

Its easy to forget that the older ones have been around ahell of alot longer than you, have been through all those stages of life, learned more life lessons, etc.

That said, just because there older doesn't mean they aren't bastards.

Anywho, try to remember you ARE a teen, and no matter how rational and sane your own thoughts are, you'll probably look back on it in a few years and quietly groan to yourself, heh. Oh, and you'll probably ignore this, I know I would have ;).

Only my close relatives deserve respect. Others earn it.

Too bad usually I have little to no tolerance towards old people, so usually they don't earn it.

That carries on into your twenties. And I totally agree with you, I only respect people who earn it, and anyone who gives me filthy looks whiel trying to kill me with one of those mobility scooter things will probably never earn it.

Just inform them that it's a fallacy. Then prepare for a beating.

You may be right, but they're in charge.

Oh I understand that often they probably know more than I do, and that I'm likely wrong the majority of the time, but I just can't stand those that insist they deserve complete and utter respect when they keep acting rude to me.

Ahh, sorry, didn't read it right. Yeah, screw'em. And I know my grandparents aren't the most 'wise' of people, heh.

Being in the middle of that gap (I'm 25, not quite a youngin anymore, but not the "Elder") I have to agree. I always respect my elders in the traditional sense. I won't beat them up or anything, or be openly disrespectful. But to be honest, opening a dialogue of contending points isn't disrespectful, even if they are wrong. Don't let it get you down.
