Resubscribe to Warhammer, Get Shiny Things

Mythic is trying to lure back ex-Warhammer Online subscribers with a new program that offers incentives like ten free days of play, exclusive quest chains, and more.

Having just launched the "Call to Arms" live expansion with its two brand-new classes (the Dwarf Slayer and Ork Choppa), Mythic Entertainment thinks it's the perfect time for lapsed WAR players to rejoin the fold. Only problem is convincing them, right? Mythic's hoping its new "Call to Arms Re-Enlistment Program [http://www.warhammeronline.com/call_to_arms/re-enlist.php]" might offer enough to get players who just didn't like WAR or moved on to that other MMOG-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named to jump back into the fray.

"There is no better time to enlist, for your strength is needed!" the Warhammer Online site declares. "Rise now, and bear the banners of war. To arms, and to glory!"

No soldier who calls himself a man of war is willing to bear any banners without a little bit of compensation, though. To that end, Mythic is offering, among other things, what MMOG players want more than anything else in a virtual world: loot. "Besides getting 10 free days starting when you reactivate your account, you'll also get all the rested experience for the time you've been gone, and a unique quest chain with bonus reward items!" the site says.

Don't take this to necessarily mean the death knells for WAR. Coming on the heels of the announcement of the game's major drop [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90081-Warhammer-Online-Merges-Servers] in subscribers, this promotion may smack of desperation. But don't forget, most MMOGs have programs like this, World of Warcraft included. So, ex-WAR players, will this be enough to get you back in the game, or have you completely moved on?

these sorts of things are only incentives to restart playing an mmo, imo it's not enough to make someone change game completely over

My biggest problem with this idiocy is that you have to subscribe to get the 10 free days. This tells me that THEY obviously don't believe the game is actually improved enough to bring me back, or they'd be willing to let the 10 days speak for itself.

WAR showed me that my time with MMOs were over.... I am sure there are many like me. WAR proved to be a Nicorette from WoW. And now we need neither!

Hell I like the game, I DLed the trial and wanted to subscribe. I'm getting it withen the month in the matter of fact. I have a question though.

Why do MMOs have to be WoW killers? WoW is a good game and WAR is a good game. Is that enough? That falacy is like saying that FPSs should run Halo out of business, if it fails to do so the game sucks. Am I alone on this? Am I the only one who believes that MMOs are a genre and not Warcraft?

Well, it's sort of like block puzzle games. Is Boom Blocks as good as Tetris? No, but people will GENERALLY choose Tetris over Boom Blocks, since it's a more well-known game.

WoW is a good game. WAR is a good game. Not every game should measure up to WoW, not every one will. I agree, people need to chill out.

If with those shiny things they give me back my 3 level 40 characters and all my gear who all magically disappeared after I cancelled my subscription...

I canceled my sub but I don't think I will be going back, as I also erased all of my characters. In hindsight I feel like a tool as I could have sold my account for around 500 bucks.

Usually the loot they give out as prizes and what not isn't that good. It can't be as good as normal items because it would be unfair to those who didn't receive it.

its all about marketing. Uldor is taking forever and WoW addicts do get bored very easy. there basically saying pay a few dollars for for a few extra days.

C'mon somebody... go back and let us know if the game has improved and the goodies are enough that it is worth re-subbing.

Hadn't it been for the cinematic trailer, I would never had played WAR. I am still unsure if I can forgive Mythic for not making it at least half as awesome as the trailer.

And the 'special rewards' look like throphies to me. All in all, those incentives are hardly enough to bring me, allthough a friend of mine is most likely going to try it again now.

I had a terrible experience at the beggining of the game. After paying £10 for the chance to play the beta I was seriously dissapointed when it first wouldn't let me download the game, then wouldn't let me register, then make me re-download 15gb of stuff. After eventually getting to play the game 1 day before the release I experienced constant crashes and the realisation that when it say's "minimum spec" what it ACTUALLY means is "don't bother playing" because the graphics were terrible on my pc and the "WAR" experience was pretty rubbish when the large amounts of players produced lag and sometimes crashes.

Having said that if I had an super PC I would have loved it.

*Edit* And so there is no way i'm going back!!

Well, perhaps. I joined WAR because I'd been a fan of Warhammer, I left because it confirmed what I'd suspected- I'm not an MMO kind of guy. If things have picked up I might take another look, I guess.
