Retail sucks.

[small]Disclaimer: I have to say that these are my views and not the views of Toys "R" Us.[/small]

Anyone that works in retail knows how much it sucks. The people suck. The lines suck. Calling your manager over sucks. Crying children sucks. It's just all one big 'ole Suckfest (09). I've been getting so many jackass customers lately at work. Sadly, I work at Toys "R" Us and this is the worst time to be working in retail, much less a toy store. I get some nice people, but the jerks seem to outshine the nice people.

Example #1: A lady came into my line with her Spongebob toy. I asked her if she wanted a gift receipt with her purchase. She said no. Now, the guy behind her heard her say no. At the end when she was about to pay, she asked if she could have a gift receipt....Now once the transaction is complete, I can't go back and print out a gift receipt. The computers won't allow anyone to. Therefore, I hafta send them over to Customer Service. She told my manager that I didn't ask her if she wanted one. I was like, "...what the fuck?" My manager came over to me and I explained to her what happened. She believed me because the lady was a complete bitchola to them too.

Example #2: A lady came up looking slightly aggravated. So she brings up this half-open car seat box. I didn't really pay much mind to it and I rang it up. I told her, "That'll be $179.99." She freaks out. "No. There's a price on the top and it says marked as is." The price that it was supposedly marked was $19.99. Now, anyone that's just walked through the baby section of any store or heard people talk about baby stuff knows there's NO WAY IN HELL that a car seat's gonna be $19.99. So I had to call my manager over because she kept trying to say that the price is suppose to be $19.99 and not $179.99. Both my department manager and the assistant manager came over to see what the problem was. Now the lady's really ticked off because she swears up and down that she should get a new car seat for $19.99. Saying that she has four kids already (oh boy) and that she knows how much car seats are. So to see something this cheap, she wanted it. They looked up the SKN number and told the lady that the price tag was for a PSP cable. Also, that another customer (probably some kid) stuck the price tag on it. Too bad this lady was hellbent on getting this car seat for $19.99. She caught an attitude and said that she wanted the number to our HQ office so she can call and complain.

After THAT fiasco, the managers were rushing to find out what the problem is. Apparently, if they didn't have proof to show the HQ, the lady would've gotten the damn thing for $19.99. It was just ridiculous.

I know there's gonna be more shit like this as we draw closer to the Holiday Hoopla. So, my question to you, my fellow Escapists, do you work in retail? What are some of your stories, both good and bad. I'm interesting to know.

I only worked in retail for a short amount of time myself, but it sounds like this website [http://notalwaysright.com/] might be of interest to you.

Oh yeah, I've used that for my old job sometimes. I've gotten some interesting stories from people while working at a fast food place. You get all walks of life in there. Hell, we've gotten celebrities to come in a couple times.

Never worked in retail, I've heard... stories though...
You learn that a lot of people suck. It's what continues my lack of faith in humanity. Maybe I should avoid jobs like this...

I worked in retail for a year. Hated it. It was my first job.

Then when I got my second and third job I realized I loved retail work. Think about it, you have interesting stories to tell. Want to listen to my dad's thrilling tale of fixing an individual's router and getting a present of a box of onions? No? Neither did I......four times.

Yeah, I do. People are, however, generally nice to me... Maybe because of my rugged handsomeness..

Anyway, there's this creepy old lady who keep coming now and then, and I bet I could file some sexual harassement charges against her. She wants me to dance with her, calls me pretty and whatnot. It's kinda unnerving when I'm sitting behind the counter trying to do my job.

That's the worst thing that comes to my mind.

I enjoy working in retail at the moment, my bosses are excellent and the big bosses are also excellent. I get pay rises and awesome bonuses at the end of the year. I have awesome regular customers and the number of those outways the dipshits that I have to fight with once every so often. I work in a store full of girls and get along extremely well with every single one of them. And previous to this I worked in fast food...

Don't complain about Toy's R Us unless you would like to try spending half of Christmas day completing catering orders for inconsiderate bastards who complain they are getting what they want at the expense of your Christmas morning. Any Aussies that have worked for Red Rooster know exactly where I am coming from.

I never, ever, ever plan on working in a Shop for this very reason. I'm relatively good at talking to people, but some people are just not nice.

Oh I love all the stories that I've accumulated from working at fast food places, volunteering as a cashier at a church and now Toys "R" Us. It's just a bugger that the people on the other side of the cash register tend to not think about us (the workers). Most people that I get some sort of compassion from work in retail as well. I talked to a few in my line today while waiting for my managers. They understood some of the heartache I've gone through, so they cut me a lot of slack.

But on the same token, some people are just really inconsiderate. We close at 9pm, correct? People decide to stroll in at 8:55pm and take their time shopping around. That means, all the registers have to stay open because we can't "rush" the customers out.

Same thing happened at my previous job. People use to love coming in at 9:59pm to order food, even though they see that the grills were cleaned off. I just wish more people had others in mind instead of themselves. But I know that seems to be difficult for most people.

I might not have been slapped, but I've been cursed at for something that was the customer's fault. Then when my manager came over to try to justify things, I get called a "*****" to my face. How awesome. /sarcasm

Yes, definitely. It sucks that we have to think that way.

I've been bartending for over 4 years now, and let me tell you, the customer is not always right. Hardly ever when it comes to alcohol. I've had cute girls order a round of drinks, so I'll admit that I might have been a little more generous with those drinks, not much though. She ended up not tipping a penny, then came up and bitched that there wasn't any booze in there. Apparently they had someone sober try it too. I know for a fact that there was as much as I would put in my own drinks in each one. And she didn't tip. There is no way in hell that she is getting anything else. And it isn't just with booze either. Last night we had someone order some food, then get caught giving drinks to someone underage. We kicked them both out. So the person who ordered and paid for the food was gone. Waited several minutes and the gave the food out to employees. Shortly after that, two girls come up bitching at me that they were the ones who paid for the food and now they want their money back. Now I have no idea if they had paid or not, so there is no way I am just going to hand them some money. So I use our diplomatic "this is how it's gonna be" phrase of "It's our house policy" and moved on to the next customer. We probably won't see them for a couple months and wouldn't even if that hadn't happened. Have a nice night and get out. We won't miss your business. And I hate people who ask for a strong drink. I don't walk into your job at Target and ask you to throw in a couple free batteries when I buy some jeans. That's stealing.

My sister works in retail in an electronics store and after the stories she has told me, I can't decide whether I want to avoid all retail jobs forever or work at one for 'teh lulz'.

I worked briefly for Sainsbury's and believe me it was not pleasant. It only takes one bad customer to ruin a whole day.
