So there's been a lot of disappointment over Evangelion 3.0 (or 3.33) when it was clear that it was not a hot blooded reboot of Evangelion like a lot of people expected from 2.0 but a hilarious bait and switch to reemphasize the original point of Evangelion. I appreciate it on that level alone but I understand it's not a satisfying narrative (though we'll have to wait until 4.0 comes out to come to any real conclusion about Rebuild).
And so I present to you RE-Take Evangelion, a doujinshi manga released back in 2004, before the release of the Rebuild movies (as well the release of the Mass Effect series and the Retake Mass Effect movement, making the name a hilarious coincidence in my opinion).
The basic premise is that after the events of End of Evangelion, Shinji wakes up to right after the events of Episode 16 or thereabouts, thinking that everything from that followed up to the end of the movie was all a dream. He then uses his knowledge of the future to try and prevent all the crazy depressing stuff that comes after but of course it doesn't quite go the way he wants. It's an amazing series and while the ending is "happier" and more satisfying, it never feels like it betrays what Evangelion is.
Just a warning though - it IS technically porn, but in the way that Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime are also technically porn. Luckily for you guys there's an all-ages re-release of the series (think Realta Nua) found here [http://www.mangapark.com/manga/evangelion-re-take-all-ages-version-doujinshi].
