Headline: Plain Black & White Fun

Welcome to Killzone! In this game you fight the Helghast, outcasts abandoned by humanity in a poisonous world that has returned to Earth to kill us all. Got that? Good, as you can probably tell by my quick briefing, Killzone’s story is nothing more than just seems like a blur. Nothing genuinely good or bad to say about it, next part.

Shoot those orange eyes!

You and a team of 3 others; each with their own stats fight together to the end in this 15 hour game all for humanity’s sake. First of all, AI; these enemies are a little behind the times as they will pause and do some smart things but not as much as today's competition. The arsenals are fitting and many also feature secondary weapons. Missions always have shooting but in some instances, you may have to resort to different tactics such as stealth or watching out for comrades. You might have plant bombs, man a turret, or proceed very warily; enemies run around taking cover on plain ground but they are trickier on stairwells. While there isn't anything particularly distinguishing about Killzone compared to other games, the shooting mechanics are sound. They’re so well refined that it’s still enjoyable to kill just one more Helghast, even after clearing a swarm of them.

Graphically Killzone shines with great might on a PS2; the level design is varied with good corridor designs, strong outside levels and such to avoid overly repeating itself. Everything from weapons to enemies, characters to cut scenes, and locations are filled with great artistry. However, the frame rate gets stuck, textures occasionally break, and a grey, black, & white styled colour pallet eventually gets dull. Sound wise, there’s a sweeping orchestral score and voice acting to boot but the weapon sounds feel blunt.

I still can’t place my finger on it as to why, but I kind of look up to the Helghast

Lastly online play is fun, it’s just too bad that some glitches walk around because their still around in online play too. I would recommend Killzone but also warn buyers that it isn't Halo; it’s fun with what it has to offer despite its problems...

8.0/ 10 GREAT (PS2)

+Decently varied campaign

+Combat has a solid feel

+Strong production values

-Occasionally falters technically or with AI
