Released: 2002
Difficulty: Just Right
Time Spent: 10 to 20 Hours
Headline: A great newcomer to an old genre
Ratchet & Clank is a very fun game. The game is mainly an action adventure affair but it also features aspects of puzzlers, shooters, platforming, racing and a couple other genres that do not immediately come to mind. The game also brings all these aspects of genres together with perfect layout to make each segment feel right at home.
Most guns pack a serious punch of death
A lone Lombax named Ratchet finds a robot after an interruption in an otherwise normal day. The robot awakens and explains that a big, bad corporate giant is going to make a really valuable planet by removing chunks from all other worlds. Clank is a robot the size of a backpack, technically smart, and judging while Ratchet is improvising, a talker, and a little arrogant. Their personalities bounce off each other real well and with some conflict; but their pairing remains enjoyably humorous. Ratchet wants to see the galaxy and they get to do so by helping each other through their journey. Off the two go armed to the teeth with 16 weapons, gadgets, Clank’s necessary customizations, and a space ship. They enter a world where nuts & bolts are currency and every character you find has some very laugh-out loud-lines.
The action is typical but there's great pacing, and variety to always keep something interesting coming. There is a good deal of memorable platforming which also has thorough pacing. The adventure portion has most planets with something you are immediately tasked with and other distractions where you are to come back with other equipment / items. Some of these are plot based but usually if it is, you’ll explore a new area; other times it’ll be just for optional rewards, various collectibles, funny commercials, and skill points.
If you use this weapon, your enemy will resent you for as long as he lives
The graphics are beautiful with a nice colour pallet, stable frame rate, fluid models and lots of roundness. The camera is definitely unique, you have full control of it but it will sometimes still cause weird viewing angles. The voice work is really well done, music is quirky & chirpy, and effects sound appropriate.
The game is long with around 15 to 20 hours, some boss fights and lots of thing to go for perfect score. Overall, I think we all fell in love with this sort genre at one time whether it be Mario, Spyro, Rayman, etc and this is where I landed. You may realize why I only gave it an 8.5; the experience is well replicated with extra's to keep you going. It is still a fair bit like others; but nobody should consider that as their main reason for not buying it.
8.5/ 10 GREAT (PS2)
+Shooting emphasis with platforming is a great mix
+Integrates elements of other genres quite well
+A funny cast of characters
+Excellent look and sound
-It borrows and still feels a lot like many platformers before it
