The Nintendo DS has its fair share of gimmicky games, but Square Enix managed to create a game which doesn't involve Moogles or effeminate male characters aimed at a female audience, instead, they created Space Invader Extreme, one of their most gender neutral titles in years.

Space Invaders Extreme is a bit of a change to regular Space Invaders, there's multiple levels and it has remixed music, it's kind of a fusion of Space Invaders with rhythm games (if only in terms of the music used). If you are worried Square Enix have butchered a classic, fear not, for the 30th Anniversary of Space Invaders this is a worthy tribute to the original game without it feeling stale.

Furthermore it is controlled with buttons and not so much the stylus, so this is actually closer to the original Space Invaders than you might expect. Of course, there are more casual additions to the modes, with save points in Arcade Mode which let you continue from whichever level you left off. You can't save in the middle of a level, so don't think it's too easy to master what could have been a watered down Space Invaders game. If you don't like the save points in your game and want a competitive experience, there is a competitive ranking mode where you play the game with no save points to score a World Record.

Space Invaders Extreme is everything you could want in a simple pick up and play handheld game, but it's complex and appealing to the more intense gamers who grew up with the original Space Invaders to not be too easy or too boring. The High Score feature of this game gives it a lot of replay value.

I liked Space Invaders Extreme and while I don't give scores in my reviews like, say, David and Margaret from the Australian movie criticism show Margaret and David: At The Movies do, but I'd like to leave you with the impression that this game is worth owning in your DS collection if you want something familiar, but different enough from usual fare on the DS to be worth your time.
