WET follows a girl with a hardcore attitude named Rubi, through the "cult classic" vibe world also used in the recent House of the Dead: Overkill. The demo begins on a gangster deal going wrong as bullets fly when Simmons, the antagonist for the demo at least, takes a mysterious brief case without handing over the cash. Rubi, claiming that the case is hers, flies through a ceiling window, thus beginning the game play.
WET also follows some game play mechanics found in another game, Stranglehold. Most of the gun play focuses on slow motion jumping, sliding and wall running, they cleverly name "Rubi Vision". Using this, the player nails down bad guy after bad guy with their dual pistols, one auto focused on someone near the cursor, the other controlled by the right analog stick. It's a very interesting way to get around how to use two guns at once and a great incentive to kill baddies in as many different ways as possible. Did I mention you can run up people and shot while sliding down ladders? Yeah, you can that.
Every now and then you'll even be able to whip out a sword Rubi carries on her back, getting rid of any close combat problems but it doesn't seem to offer more than slashing enemies and occasional door opening. Hopefully it becomes helpful in finding the scattered bottles of alcohol(for health) or toy monkey (for collecting?).
The second act is where I think WET shines. Any scene that opens with Rubi riding on top of a car, shooting of course, has to be good. While "Rubi Vision" is missing for most of the car riding/chasing scene, you instead get a zoom in feature which comes in handy while your's and the enemy's cars zigzag through highway traffic. The game keeps you on your toes even more (as if riding on a car on the highway wasn't enough) by throwing in reaction time button presses to avoid flipping cars and pile ups that Rubi is most likely creating herself anyways.
I found this to be a very fun demo with some interesting new ideas for the typical hack and slashes out there. Whether or not it's a solid hit will have to wait until the 15th of this month.
The Good
- great gun play with same new twists on the "there's a bad guy over there, go shot them" genre. The music and film grain make you feel like you're playing a movie.
The Bad
- Had some texture and some hit detection problems but that's to be expected from a demo. Sword needs to be used in more ways than close combat.
Bottom Line: Like to kills lots of people in interesting ways? download it! It's free.
This review is based on the xbox 360 version of the demo.
P2 is looking for more stuff to review so send some suggestions. Also hopes to have videos soon.
