I have been playing FF XIII this days, I'm really enjoying the game, but I started playing the game with the Idea "this game is just about graphics and the gameplay is pretty boring" because every "professional reviewer" was saying that.
I feel they are wrong, I mean yeah the Autoplay may let you skip the fun, but you can avoid pressing autoplay, I think this game have an interesting mechanics and fighting system.

Maybe It's because I haven't played many FF games is the reason I'm enjoying the game, cause I wasn't expecting too much.

So, what do you think about Final Fantasy XIII or about Reviewers?

Haven't played FFXIII, a friend of mine has it for 360, so I'll borrow it when he's done, or get it for PS3 when I finally get one.

As for reviewers, I try to read/watch multiple reviews to get an idea of what a reviewer has a tendency of saying. A lot of them are just gamers with an opinion, while a few of them actually put in some effort into telling you about the game.

Final Fantasy XIII will be one of two things:

Extreme Love.
or
Extreme Hate.

There is absolutely no middle ground when it comes to this game.

(As per my avatar, put me in the FF13 hate group)

A reviewer's credibility results from the perception that they speak the truth regarding their opinion on the game. That a particular reviewer said a game was bad when you found it fun does not harm their credibility in any way.

The fighting mechanics were the only thing I liked about FFXIII, even when using auto-play.

I fucking hated the rest of the game though.

I stopped listening to reviews after AVP. 2's and 3's nothing. Don't listen to reviewers unless your on the fence. Make your own decisions.

Final Fantasy XIII is the first FF game I've enjoyed since FFX, the only other one besides that being the original (and the GBA remake). So, for a series of 14 games (not even counting spinoffs and remakes), I've enjoyed 3. Not a good track record. Then again, I don't typically enjoy JRPGs at all; I find them too linear and I don't believe that a game that doesn't allow for any player-driven character development ("leveling up" down a pre-determined skillset is NOT development) should call itself an RPG of any sort. FFXIII, on the other hand, is far more accessible to me, allowing me (at least later in the game) to develop characters the way I want, build teams based on my play-style and favorite tactics, and not have to worry too much about micromanagement. The story makes about as much sense as any other JRPG, but at least the characters are fun and the graphics are gorgeous.
As for reviewers, I don't trust any of them, except maybe the Penny Arcade guys. I don't think that many reviewers are honestly objective these days- most either getting sucked into hype or getting outright paid off to write good reviews. Even the honest, objective reviewers are still human; there's always a good chance that I won't agree with their opinions. The Penny Arcade guys, at least, seem to have similar taste to mine, they won't allow advertising space on their site for a game that they don't actively endorse, and they will write an article retracting a positive review or preview if something changes and the final product doesn't deliver (one of their most notable retraction being a simultaneous apology for hyping Blur and dissing Split/Second).

I don't let reviewers determine my purchases. I usually look at the metacritic score, just one reviewer is unreliable; and even then that only counts for a small amount of my desicion on getting a game.

I rely on word of mouth way more than reviews.

I would say you're liking it because of the extremely low expectation you must have had for the game based on all the negative things people have said about it. Don't forget, expectation is a major factor on whether you like a game or not. I find it's usually find you judge a game based on whether or not it meets your expectation. Obviously, a lower expectation of a game would mean it's easier to find the game good (or at least not as bad as you were expecting).

When looking at reviews I try to lignore any subjective argument a reviewer may make. One guy may love what another guy hates, after all. I read/watch plenty of reviews just to check what a game is all about (gameplay, features, music, importance of the story) and I make up my own mind whether I like it or not.

And yes, I loved FFXIII.

I'm with Yahtzee when he says that all reviews are subjective personal opinions and that if you enjoy a game, they shouldn't bother you.
The only case in which this isn't true, is when a group of reviewers plagerise each other trying to pretend they came up with the humourous put-downs themselves (I remember the reading a review of the re-release of Braid, which was essentially Yahtzee's review in a slightly different order).

I hadn't heard much about FFXIII when I got it, but overall I enjoyed it. It had its flaws, and it's extremely linear even by FF standards, but I found a lot to like.

I won't let other people's opinions affect that.

Perfect 10 my fucking arse.
it wasnt that bad, it got the whole imersion thing spot on I really did feel like I was exploring darkest Africa, although this is coming from somone who usually steers clear of any FPS set in reality, but I didnt finish it because I simply lost track of what the hell I was suposed to be doing plot wise (and I wasnt that clear on it in the first place) but I may reinstall one day

anyway sorry about that, I think with reveiws its more about you working out if you will like the game or not if your unsure, if it has a low number you can write it off usually (or mabye not) you need to actually read the reveiw, usually they go into more detail and yes it dose depend on their perosnal taste, but any reveiwer dose have an opionion, and a good reveiwer is fair with good and bad points, anyway somtimes you need a little more info than a number

I mean the latest COD could get a 9/10 but I know I wouldnt like it because its not to my taste, But if a reveiw of Fallout New Vegas got a lower score simply for not being any different to number 3 I would still rush out and but it because I loved fallout 3 and are so exicted for another story in the Fallout universe (I would argue that NV improved on it alot but thats beside the point)

Really? I'd put myself in the middle ground. Yes, there are a few things I dislike about the game. Mainly the linearity and the levelling system (how they restrict how much you can level up at a given time. It really makes certain boss battles a *****). But overall I did enjoy the game even if I don't love it. Hopefully Versus XIII will turn out better if they ever get around to finishing and releasing the bloody thing.

OT: As stated above there are a few things I've taken issue with and since I've already mentioned them I won't repeat them or my hopes for Versus to be better, especially with the time spent in development so far. As far as reviewers go, sometimes they can save me from purchasing a game I'd likely regret (I almost bough Legendary until I looked at some reviews) but normally I don't generally trust reviewers of any sort simply because I may like what they dislike. So normally I prefer to rent a game beforehand and try it for myself.

OBJECTION! I was decidedly meh on it.
OP: You just have to get over the extreme linearity and Hope. It becomes an average RPG after that. I really don't see the vicious hate it gets.

Who on earth gave that game a 10? I mean, I enjoyed it a lot, but I'd never give it a perfect score.

Also I dont really consider Yahtzee vidoes reveiws, they are funny as hell and he does make good points but if I followed every one of his reveiws I would hadly ever be able to play a game without hating it

That's like saying if you get past Jar-Jar Binks, midichorians and the whole political angle, The Phantom Menance becomes a bland Sci-Fi movie...

Okay, you win for the awesome comparison. It is a game I should hate. I hated FFX, for example. Something about it just never angered me like other games akin to it have.

It's more of a 7.3

It's okay, but that's about all you can say of it.

As for reviewers, I tend to disagree with most of them.

Call of Duty gets a 9.6? It gets lauded for it's story?

I lol'd and went back to playing Yosumin! That has more story than COD.

I was going to buy FFXIII until I read the reviews. I think the biggest criticism was how linear the game is and that turned me off. But I think a lot of reviews can be hit or miss, sometimes it's about personal taste.
