*Disclaimer*: Most of the following will be my opinion, and I am entitled to it. Don't be the one to go "ur rong oblivin is da bst gaem evar ur stoopid" and make yourself look like an idiot.

There have been a lot of Oblivion topics recently, and I keep seeing the fans who think it's perfect and the best game ever, and the people who think it's terrible and over-hyped. I believe Oblivion is not as good as most people think it is. Looking at IGN, it has a 9.3, which is pretty damn good. But why? Is it because the controls are tight and responsive? No. Is it because the characters are deep and dialogue is engaging? No. Or is it because the gameplay is fun and interesting and the story keeps you hooked? No, unless you're doing the side quests.

So at first glance, that doesn't sound like a very good game. In fact, if I saw a review like that, I would think 'Too bad, another worthless fantasy game for ignorant grandmothers to buy for their ignorant grandchildren'. But it still has redeeming qualities. The graphics are more than decent (althoug some textures are pretty low-res), and the environments can be better looking than moany things we see today. And there's just so much to do. All the quests, all the guilds, cults, factions, and all the general RPG progressing.

But anyway, the point of this is to review Oblivion completely un-biased and objective, and I will be using the scoring system from IGN.

Presentation- 8.5

The interface is easy to use, but some of the menu systems can be bothersome.

Graphics- 9.0

The graphics are great, and the only thing keeping it from being higher is the lack of art direction. It's just a typical European forest with typical medieval towns. And that's it.

Sound- 6.2

The music is generic. there was nothing memorable about it at all. It fit with the generic fantasy world, but it wasn't in any way good. That extra .2 is for Captain Picard, but it's also brought down by having ~5 voice actors, and having some characters switch between voices.

Gameplay- 7.8

Combat is terrible. The most strategic it gets is "right-click, wait for attack, mash left-click". Moving feels very floaty (and horses barely go faster than you can running). Nothing feels powerful or immersive, and dialogue is basically useless.

Lasting Appeal- 9.5

Now this is a huge WTF. With all the problems it has, Oblivion still manages to stay interesting with all its side quests and characters.

Overall- 8.2 (after averaging it)

Now why does it get so much praise? With all its problems, how do people still enjoy it after this long? And why are Oblivion and Fallout 3 basically the only games that are immune to regular judgment?

I don't really know what the point of this thread is...

It should be in User Reviews, but even then I wouldn't call this much of a review.

Though the information you provide is ... well almost nothing, I agree with you, Oblivion is not that great, it has several flaws, and some design choices that really don't make any sense (enemies that level up with you).

In future put reviews in the review section. Plus for an "Objective" review you shouldn't need the disclaimer at the beginning.

The only trouble I have with Oblivion is the small number of voice actors and that it's full of bugs that can break the game. I can't complete the thieves guild because I did some side quest too soon, and if I try to complete the mission the game freezes.

I didn't read more than the first line and I'm positive it's a negative review.Don't worry,I played fallout 3 ,then played oblivion, and liked it only until I exited the Vault because I had no patience for it and the only quests I could find were to kill fish in the lake.-yes I am hopeless-

I must disagree about the music, I think Oblivion has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

Objective (Online Dictionare third meaning):
a. Uninfluenced by emotions or personal prejudices: an objective critic. See Synonyms at fair.
b. Based on observable phenomena; presented factually: an objective appraisal.

A review is never Objective, just a small notice.

However I see what you mean, Oblivion doens't have the best gameplay mechanics, but I love it because I loved Morrowind as well and it is a very nice sequal. Also as you already said it is a game packed with side quests which are (almost) never boring.

Someone didn't play a mage...Now that's some fun combat. Make 'em fight each other. Paralyze them. Summon a Daedroth. Ah...good time.

I don't know why but Oblivion kept me hooked for a long time, even though I often got frustrated at it :p
I was the same with Morrowind, I put hundreds of hours into that game, even though it would crash almost at will. I never really got into Oblivion, though. I got through the main quest once, then moved on to something else. Its not a bad game, by any means, but I prefer Morrowind.

In a certain Zero Punctuation (I believe it was the Super Smash Brothers Brawl review) ol' Yahtzee said that a "review" is ultimately someone's opinion, and therefore is, by its nature subjective.
This review was uninformative. On top of that, it haphazardly used the word "objective" to try and make the author's poor opinion of Oblivion seem "better", or more "educated"(therefore more valid) than those opinions which hold it as an excellent game.

I have never played Oblivion for more than 30 minutes, so I don't know how accurate this judgement of the game is. All I know is that it annoys the living God out of me when people use words of which they don't know the meaning in order to try and make themselves sound like they have something valuable to contribute. Congratulations, sir: you've just become the first person to irritate me this morning.

Edit: Ninja'd with a damn dictionary!

Ehhh? Okay...

This should be in User Reviews and I can't really say I agree with you.

I'd consider Oblivion to be a complete disappointment. There's a ton of content and the scenery looks great, but the underlying composition is terrible.

Any game that requires an advanced degree in mathematics and a cheat manual in order to figure out how NOT to totally fuck up your character build and how to advance levels appropriately is a disaster. The leveling system is so catastrophically broken that the game is all but unplayable.

Plus leveling up the monsters directly with your own progression betrays the underlying concept of a level-based system, which is that as I progress I'm supposed to get stronger.

Oblivions just one of those games, its got a lot wrong with it.. however it does so much right, not to mention that within the hundreds of hours you can spend with it (or maybe thats just me lol) there is bound to be something that tickles your fancy.

Plus if your on the PC, the mods and unofficial patches make up for a few of the shortcomings and add even more depth to it. Still a great game IMO, so i'll have to disagree with your review, but then again, thats beauty of an opinion.. your always entitled to your own.

I still haven't completed more than 5 of the main story quests. I got side tracked by the Dark Brotherhood, the Theives Guild etc... And then we get to the Shivering Isles.

IF you're reviewing a game objectively, wouldn't you only be able to comment on the technical aspects (glitches, FPS, etc)?

It can't be an objective, no review can be objective as all reviews are subjective opinions.

I think it is an average game. By no means bad, but not the second coming of Jesus in game form. The only quests a really enjoyed were the side quests for the daedric shrines and a couple of missions randomly around (like going into the painting to fight paint trolls with turpentine damage etc) and the thieves and dark brotherhood missions. Dark Brotherhood quests were great fun (especially since my murderer was specced in stealth and unarmed... I murder with my bare hands).
