Rewarding games

This thought occurred to me after finishing the "hard" ending of Cave Story (This old bit of information prompted me to take another spin with the game). The first time I played through the Sacred Ground, I had the vague feeling of accomplishing something great (you the feeling.) The developer had created literally a hellish course and challenged me as a player to try my skills with it. After numerous retries I finally came off the trial victorious. Well, it wasn´t really that hard, but it still felt good to beat it. After second time it naturally didn´t feel that great, but I came to realize, it wasn´t the feeling of triumph, you get after overcoming a challenge, I was after. What I found more rewarding, was learning more about the story; getting to know new aspects about the characters and the game world. It was great to see a character obtain more colour and the story gain more depth. That was rewarding enough for me. I don´t need a round of applause and a man wearing a top hat hand me big bag full of money after achieving something in a game (although, that would be nice too). What I want is an interesting and solid story for me to immerse in.

When is a game rewarding and how are you rewarded? When do you get the feeling, that the hours spent with a game were spent well? Does the game reward you by meeting your expectations or does it come through the unexpected. These are few of the things you may ponder over in this thread.

(So, it´s getting kinda late here. Please excuse me, if the above seems occasionally a bit incoherent.)

Some times the unexpected. Its like the first time you play Grim Fandango or Portal when you stop playing them you are left with that fuzzy feeling that you played something awesome and unique.

I try not to get many expectations, usually you put the bar way to high and it ends up not be what you wanted. Only a few games fully matched my expectations like Half Life 2 or Jak 2.

I get that same feeling when I look back on Bioshock. That was such a good game.

I really loved the story, till the big twist, then it got a bit stale...its like Empire Strikes Back plot twist being releaved in the middle of the movie, the rest of the movie just loses substance.

But its still a great game with a fantastic story. Dont think Bioshock 2 will pull the same trick and now that main designer of SS2 and BS 1 left the developing team...but we shall see.

Yeah, there's nothing like that feeling of breaking thru a puzzle alone and unhelped. I certainly felt that way in portal, getting stuck in a few places, at one point I actually woke up at 4am with the solution fully formed in my mind, and it worked, that was a 'wooo!' moment.

Would you like to elaborate a little? Was there a specific point where you got the feeling, this game is pure genius, or was it just a vague realization? I was just wondering, does a good game have a clear reason, why it´s good, or is it just the inexplicable feeling of satisfaction the game evokes. Where does the feeling of being rewarded come from? And lastly, am I just thinking irrelevant things again?
