I always figured rage quitting was those times as a kid when you slammed the SNES controller on the floor after the twentieth loss against Shao Khan in Mortal Kombat 3 and decided it was time to go bike riding.
For a proper rage quit you need to abruptly throw down the controller in the middle of the game before you're dead and the level / round / etc. has reached a conclusion.

I find that form is more common with multiplayer games - Mario Kart would be a big offender where you keep ending up at the back of the pack no matter what.
