Yes, lets punish people who sell games! That makes perfect sense. /sarcasm

Hey guy I have a radical new idea. Lets actually fine the shitty parents who buy Mature games for their kids. Whew! I think I just blew my own mind...

Normally videogame censorship riles me up big time but I'm not too angry about this. Of course make the fine $10,000 max and no jail time. If all countries did this then no anti-videogame nutjob would ever have the excuse of retailers selling kids these games.

Of course kids should still be able to play these games if the parents give it to them, if the law tries to stop kids playing these games that's going too far.

Oh and Rhode Island huh?I can just imagine a future episode of Family Guy.
Peter loses job.
Peter becomes video-game retailer.
Sells game to a someone who looks like he's 30.
Turns out he's 17.
It was a sting operation and Peter gets tossed in jail.
Bunch of non-sequeters and stuff.

When when you are one of the largest businesses in the US you don't want to be LOSING subscribers.

Frankly makes perfect sense to me.

Prisons invest in lobbyists and more things become prison worthy.

Once a single study that wasn't funded by anti game lobbies shoes any negative effects from violent games on children that lasts for more than a negligible amount of time I'll start understanding why these laws keep getting brought up.

As much as I hate to say this, as it affects me too, but I think game retailers should stick to the ratings. If a kid wants to play a mature game, let the parents do their research, and if they approve, they can buy the game FOR them.
Still, fines like that and/or jailtime are like taking down flies with a shotgun: not very effective and you're bound to get some complaints.
Nah, that's not a good one.
I completely agree. This is just another example of the state/government/whatever trying to substitute for parents, it's a bit sad to see we've come to this.

I don't understand how a year in jail or 1000 dollars are even close to equivalent. The average American makes around 20,000 dollars a year. Either it needs to be a year or 20,000 dollar fine or something like a month in jail or 1000 dollar fine. Just speaking numbers.

I like what the PTC say (before going to the website) but since when did kids not get their hands on porn and drugs?

This... this seems kind of strict... but I guess it's fair. Only if they include movies though... underage movie sellers too. THEN it's fair.

Calumon: I don't even have a birthday... I'm never old enough for anything. :(
Wait... I noticed before that you did this... but does that digimon have a say in everything you post?

You want to stop stores from selling mature media to kids? Then get the parents groups, retailors and whatnot together and sign a resolution to enact and follow carding policies. Maybe set up a website to show who is and is not complying. If and when such a system fails you can think about getting the legislature involved.

Game (and movies, music, books, etc.) are neither drugs nor porn and should not be treated as such in any way (except for the ones that are porn, and they're covered under the porn laws anyway). Legal enforcement of a ratings systems adopted and run by a private industry is ludicrous, and a government run ratings system is even more ludicrous. (Sucks to be you, Australia and England.)

What's the current penalty for selling/renting 18 rated DVDs/Blu-rays to kids? That should be the punishment for doing the same with M rated games.

What next, jail time for underagers watching tv to late at night, or watching the news and some daytime tv for that matter.

This is ridiculous.

Actually, whilst I disagree with the M-rating bit, the AO-rating penalties could actually be a good thing as it might finally cement the "games as a potential adult armform" idea in some peoples' minds. Of course, if its unconstitutional, that's no good at all and the discussion is over.

But still, I'd happily accept something similar as a condition on an R-rating in Australia. Heck, I'd support and endorse it.

...hmm, I never thought of it like that before. Maybe you're right. But only the AO rating. I mean, I had an arrangement with the staff at the local video store. I got them free ice cream, they sold me M rated games even though I was only 15 at the time. They shouldn't be sent to jail for letting me play Assassin's Creed. If it was Rapelay on the other hand.....

Oh for crying out loud! Don't they have more dangerous people to harass with this shit?

I tell you what, legislators. How bout you get the murder rate down here in the states, and then we can talk about handling under age gamers. Okay?

like I said, selling Saw the movie to a 10 year old is legal, but selling Saw the game to a 10 year old is illegal.
