Even though this movie bombed at the Box Office, I still wanted to see it. There was just too much talent in front and behind the camera for this movie to suck. I'm glad I did. It took the premise that Amy Schumer tried earlier this year and gave it more heart. Quite frankly, it did everything better than Trainwreck.

Meryl Streep plays an unsuccessful rock singer who plays a regular bar gig at night and clerks at a Whole Food-type place during the day. I have been a casual Meryl Streep fan in the past. Seeing an establish actress stretch herself in different, unglamorous ways as she does in recent roles. It really makes me appreciate how talented she is. As a singer, she comes off as a less bluesy Bonnie Raitt. There were a lot of musical performances in the movie. They were expertly handled by Jonathan Demme. What elevated the music scenes were the subtext that Meryl and co-star Rick Springfield were expressing while performing well-known cover songs.

Why I compared Ricki + The Flash to Trainwreck is both lead actresses play women were irresponsible and afraid of intimacy. Ricki left her husband and 3 children to pursue her rock and roll dreams. Now years later, Ricki's ex-husband (Kevin Kline) calls her out of the blue and tells her that her daughter (played by real life daughter Mamie Gummer) has just gotten a divorce and was really depressed. He wants her to come back to Indiana and help her get back on her feet.

Ricki + The Flash is not a perfect movie. It seems as messy as Ricki's life is. Maybe that's the point that screenwriter Diablo Cody was trying to make. There was no way Ricki can make up for all those years in the past that she missed in their lives. Maybe there is something she can do now. Like I said, it follows a lot of the same plot points that Trainwreck did. The only difference was: When it came to the ending of each movie. Even though, it seems light-hearted and cheesy, Ricki deserves that ending. While Trainwreck had saying, "No! Don't Do It!" Also, Ricki + The Flash is a shorter movie that doesn't wear out it's welcome. It keeps the story relatively straight-forward. While, Trainwreck meander with a lot of storylines. I liked Trainwreck. Even though, it was a typical Judd Apatow comedy with a woman in the Seth Rogen part.

To break it down: Ricki + The Flash has a better cast, director, screenwriter, story, music, etc. than Trainwreck. If you like the Amy Schumer comedy earlier this year, check out Ricki + The Flash.
