I don't get why people are surprised about this, he's not even funny his comedy is based on being awkward. The only thing I find remotely funny by him is "the ricky gervaiscarl pilkington show".

He's not even good at being offensive, charlie brooker or frankie boyle would have done a much better job

What annoys me most is why did he even get to host a large awards ceremony considering that he's such an awful comedian. There's so many amazing british comedians that deserve the status of someone who's comedy is based on a retarded dances

Uhhh...ok?

I happen to like Ricky Gervais. But I also like cringe comedy. If the whole room isn't squirming in their seats then you're doing it wrong.

Eh, but an opinion is an opinion. What can be done?

This a million times.

OT: OP is trolling.

Trying to pass off his opinions, which he knows people do not share, as facts. This sir, is a tuna, and I ordered Chicken.

Calumon: I wanted some Guilmon bread. : (

Jack: Nothing wrong with voicing your opinion, but the fact you made a whole thread to highlight your opinions of the man, offered zero discussion value, and for the fact you called it an outburst when it wasn't then, I am uninterested in what you must say.

What outburst?

I think the office is great. Hell, I wouldn't have gotten through business college without it.

Ah, celebrities. Can take a joke when it's not about them but when it is, my God, they are a bunch of whiny fucks.

This is the problem, when you're famous, you're gonna be noticed. When you're noticed, someone is going to make jokes about you, clean ones and shock ones, amongst many others. This has been true for many years now. The so called celebs should know this by now.

As for the Golden Globes over-reaction issue, so? People make jokes like that all the time, why should it matter that Ricky said it in front of them? Imagine if Frankie Boyle had said them. He'd be sued and cut off before he could make a joke about Angelina Jolie adopting the entirety of an African country.

So, to sum up, this just shows that celebrities are stuck up twats who can't handle a small joke about their past wrongs. And for my opinion on Ricky Gervais, eh, I like some of his stuff. He's watchable, at the very least.

At the Golden Globes, when he was done hosting, he suddenly said "And thank god I'm an atheist!"

Here's part of the show, I don't think it has that bit though. I think it's what OP is referring to, anyway.

That's it??? Hilarious.

The balls of that man to take the piss out of not only two of the most famous actors of the time. But to take the piss out of them from 10 feet away..... beauty.

You've based your opinion of him on one overrated scene, I didn't find the dancing thing funny either. He does seem to put quite a bit of thought behind some of his jokes though and overall I find him really funny, if a little hit and miss.

Yeah, he had me rolling with that opening speech. It was fab! Plus the reaction around the room were great. Some of the performers in that room couldn't act a polite smile to save their lives! Now that was funny.

Ricky Gervais is a great comedian, even if you don't like him, you cannot possibly deny his impact on the comedy itself. The guy has two Emmy's, 3 Golden Globes and he has an award from the Writers Guild of America for his work with the Office and Extra. Apparently the academy disagrees with you.

That said, what is so special about his outburst? Is it the fact that he drags 'God' in to it? Because I don't think he meant it in a harmful way. Its not really an outburst, more like a bad joke in my opinion, but that's about it.

I think Ricky Gervais is funny, but at the Golden Globes I wasn't laughing, it seemed to me he was trying too hard to be offensive and I didn't like the whole thing, but meh

Outburst what? Sounds like you're referring to some incident that you didn't care to put a link to, but can't tell considering you don't mention it for a second in your post :\

Anyway, I watched some of his stuff (after first seeing "his show" in GTA4) and found it hilarious. Is he fantastic like Carlin, Williams etc.? No. Is he funny all the time? Maybe not. Is he funny enough to be considered a good comedian? I'd say hell yeah.

I get that not everyone's up for his type of humour though. It's specific, often insulting and unlike, say, Carlin, he isn't that clever or as much of a character for you to be unable to respond when he insults something that you care about. But if you're into what he does, and clearly a lot of people are, he can be pretty funny to absolutely hilarious. Personally I love the stuff he did on "reading the Bible", fat people and such, check it out on YouTube, there's several good clips, had me laughing for a good while :)

I thought it was hilarious! He made Rober DeNiro laugh for God's sakes! Someone knows how to appreciate good humour! Johnny Depp looked like he was smiling off the jokes about The Tourist...really wish they'd shown Angelina's reaction. How much hate mail do you think he would get, though?

I have never really liked him, but some people do. He could have been a bit more careful though it was the Golden Globes for gods sake!

I'm assuming that it was the Charllie Sheen joke that wound people up? Not a fan of Gervais' stand up with the exception of 'Animals' and 'Politics' but I thought that was pretty funny. Would have been interesting to see Jim Jeffries do the opening speech!
