So, I'm sure most if not all of us have been in the situation where someone tries to equate a minor event to something which was a significant event in human history. This thread was inspired by one such situation on a thread I was creeping on earlier, about SWTOR. Here's the post:

Yep that is indeed Bull. Even though you could have just changed it, I respect that you didn't want to just give in; saying that you're being a "baby" would be like calling Rosa Parks a baby. I mean, sure, she was standing against extreme social injustice, but you still have your rights.
Seriously? The person in question was talking about how someone who was told to change their name for being in breach of naming rules on an MMO is similar to Rosa Parks campaigning for African-American rights?

So, Escapists. This is my first post. I'd like you to tell me what sort of things you've heard that made you think how ridiculous some people can be.

I swear every single one of your posts is about this topic. [sub][sub][sub]Future generations won't understand this joke.[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Anyway, I get to welcome you to the escapsit. Yipee. It's suprisingly on topic to do so too.

Welcome to the Escapist. The basement's over there. (that's right isn't it?)

First of all, hi and welcome! I'm sure you'll have an awesome time as long as you stay out of the basement and don't press the red button.

The spinning button is fun, though - you can press that.

OT: This [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.373559-Why-is-it-okay-for-the-company-to-screw-the-worker-over] recent thread. TC there basically started off exaggerating his problems then got pissed off when people bought it.

Also any time anybody mentions SOPA to anything that is not even remotely related. Like that thread about an uncensored version of a game, where somebody, I presume in full presence of mind, drew a comparison between censoring a game and SOPA.

I've seen the basement compared to the fiery pits of hell. Though that was actually pretty accurate come to think of it.

Hyperbole flows thick and fast on the internet, wading through it is like swimming up shit creek with no goggles. /irony

Basement's full. We're sending them to the roof now. Apparently it needs a new coat of tar.

Kinda On Topic (KOT): Welcome to the forums kinda-new-person. Please avoid talking about SOPA, CISPA, Pedophilia, Necrophila, Religion, Race, Ethnicity and ummm... porn. It always turns into a grudge match of flames.

On Topic:
I don't know if you've seen this before but EVERYONE thinks that Asians are smarmy-know-it-alls after they talk to me. True story.
You forgot homosexuality and sexism.

Also, welcome to the Escapist. Don't listen to the naysayers, the basement is a fine place to hang out. >:)

I've seen a few people here on the escapist keep bringing up the ME3 ordeal when criticizing MovieBob when he's not even talking about it anymore and everyone else has gotten over it (well apparently not..)

Let us not forget the "friendzone".

OT: He did have a lot of words to say, didn't he? And so many puntuation marks!!! Clearly the sign of a well balanced mind who would never be disagreeable.

It's the Escapist, people massively over react. There was once soem guy comparing the fact he refused to comply with his school's demand that he can't wear a hat to Martin Luther King.

Get used to Hitler being brought up as well.

Don't forget about circumcision. That's a real firestarter

Circumcision? Really? Huh.

I mean there's all sorts of people in the world and if people want to do weird stuff with their kid's junk then that's fair enough, you know? I mean, I had a friend who had 2 sisters and his mum was real poor so she dressed him in girls clothes till he went to primary school. It left him some baggage but at the end of the day it was her call. Don't really see what's contetious about that.

It isn't just the Escapist. Most of the forum goers on gaming or anime sites (could be others, but I visited mainly gaming and anime sites) I visited in my lifetime use this crazy, left-field hyperbole.
I think due to the internet meaning we miss out all those no verbal clues people often compensate with hyperbole. I would like to think most of us in real life can get facial clue and stuff, and with that gone on the internet it's harder to express your feelings.

AI would also suppose that it also seems harder to moderate yourself as you don't have an immediate visual feedback, so things you think in your head get more freely said. I would never say some of the things I think about as I realize on reflection it's kind of dumb but with the internet being as it is, it is easier to just instinctively spew your immediate thoughts which lack being sobered by temperance and perspective.
