Simple problem with Rift. You can't out WoW WoW. If you want to kill WoW, cloning it isn't going to work unless you make something that is just head and shoulders better. Successful MMOs have great player retention so to get someone to leave you have to offer something very compelling.

Also the OP is kinda funny, Rift advertised heavily, there were adds on WoWhead and MMO-C, two of the biggest WoW sites for a couple months leading up to its release as well as on many other major gaming sites. Most of them with the tag line "You aren't in Azeroth anymore." Additionally there is absolutely no evidence that the players leaving WoW are leaving it for Rift, they may just be leaving from burnout or similar.

I played Rift in beta and some of my guild mates tried it when it came out. It's basically WoW with shiny graphics(I prefer the cartoony WoW graphics) and all the issues that plauged WoW back in Vanilla. (horribly imbalanced, limited endgame, lacks polish) For a game with the tagline "You're not in Azeroth anymore." it certainly reminds me of being there.

The problem with Rift is, if I want to play a WoW like game then I play WoW. Rift isn't doing enough different to justify leaving a more polished game with a larger player base.

WoW isn't going to "die" for many years, or until Blizzard decides to kill it for WoW 2. A lot of people who are quitting are burnt out on WoW style MMO's, they aren't running to Rift for more the same. Rift is better than Aion, but it's never going to come close to three million plus subscriptions.

Rift is good because it's new and shiny, and playing it to me felt like 'Oooh, so much to explore and see' but I know damn well in a few months I'll be 'Well, that was great, but it's just WoW re-skinned. Back to WoW!'

Neither :p

I'm playing Dungeon Fighter Online.

Free-to-play 2d beat em up with Street Fighter controls. Use a gamepad and the combat is very rewarding.

The only real downfall is that you have to pay real money to customize the look of your character and for some other items. None of those are mandatory.

I've never played Rift but I've played WoW for several years. I played Cataclysm for a month then I just had enough.

I'll go back under my bridge now.
Please, do so. XD

OT: It's just another copy, if you want something different, wait for Guild Wars 2.

Rift has advertisements everywhere, there isn't a black corner of the far net that hasn't been posted in Rift ads.
But besides that it's hilarious "We're not in Azeroth anymore". Ha.
The game copies point for point every system WoW uses without altering virtually anything.

But I digress, Rift was fun from the beta I played, I enjoyed the higher paced energy regen as it made Rogues more fun at low level than WoW's but the casters seemed... Lacking?
Maybe I'm just biased because Fire Mage in WoW is the pinnacle of casting. Replicating the particles and procs isn't enough to capture what I do with my mage so I'm not sold there.

I didn't get into any instances so I can't comment on end game.

The world events were fun while the novelty lasted but really I was sick of them in a couple days.
It comes down to
Bored?
_____Yes_______|________No________
___Find party____|__Continue grinding__

Party available?
_____Yes_______|________No________
___Blindly follow__|______Log off_______

The graphics are better but I prefer WoW's Aesthetics, much stronger color palate in my opinion.
Plus I think Blizzard has more experience making relevant information apparent, Rift's graphics make it seem busy.

All that is besides the point, those who play WoW will continue to play WoW, I saw Rift as a polished but ultimately redundant re-skin that lacked the social ties WoW has.
If you enjoy Rift I'm happy for you, it's good, it's just nothing new.

We're beating this horse again?

World of Warcraft reinvented the MMO, other, including Rift, are attempting to live off of its triumphant success. This isn't difficult to understand, it isn't rocket science either. Just plain business motives.

That's all you need to know.

Its interesting to hear all these perspectives. Rift for me is a mixture of Everquest and WOW. WHich makes sense. Becuase Trion is a company formed form developers who left Sony and EVerquest after its initial Downfall. LOL Ive been through much of these discussions about the next big game before. Even before WOW came out and i was in EQ. I hear the talk in WOW people do want something more they always seem to do lol. As technology advances it seems we expect gameplay too as well. Though it takes more thought into Creativity of a MMORPG hence we dont have a major blockbuster outdating the previous one as soon as you create a account.

I've played both, and I'll say what I've said on other sites:

Each has its strong points and its weak points, which break approximately even. (Fans who insist that one game is unequivocally better than the other should probably not be taken seriously.)

Is Rift going to kill WoW? No. WoW will collapse under its own weight (creating a massive sinkhole of nerdrage in the process) sooner or later. But Rift is a good game in its own right (not to say that it couldn't use work) and may well weather the competition.

Also, it's got Dacia Ultan.

If fifteen bucks a month really breaks the bank, you may want another hobby. Nothing I've heard about it makes it sound better than WoW.

wow and rift are very similiar.

to me rift seems superior in gameplay, story etc the main issue with rift for me is the lack of people on servers. rift should merge low population servers so things like the lfg tool works especially for people that arent from the US

No argument here. Both are "Everquest refinement model" games.

I agree that the writing is better. although it's a bit ridiculous how many overly-loyal WoW fans will go so far out of their way to insist the opposite. (Not to mention how they seem to invariably base their conclusions on misconceptions, on completely arbitrary criteria, or both.)

Gameplay...well, there are things each game could learn from the other. But Rift's edges do seem to be more blatant. For example, you can buy off soul exhaustion, but not resurrection sickness (roughly equivalent).

However, server merges tend not to happen until a game is on its last legs. And that's hardly the impression that a new game wants to be sending out.

yeah i just think that they made a mistake in the begining when they had like 30 servers on day one. so everyone is spread out too much. not sure how they can fix it with out getting loads more players or merging servers.

After years of Dominance, WoW is loosing whole guilds of people at a time! To a still relatively unknown game called RIFT! No billboards. No commercials. Yet still it is attracting MMORPGer's! Can this game of RIFT's become number 1? Will WoW endure to its last planned expansion? Or will only the Die hards remain like in Sony's Everquest? I Leave it to you The Gamers, the Trollers, and the Main Fan Base to DECIDE!
Oh HAI! Guy from Trion Worlds marketing department! How are you today?

(and its just trolls not trollers for future reference. if you want people to think you are a trustworthy fellow on the internet who isn't just shilling a product then you might want to be more careful about the slang)

Rift took everything it could from WoW and tried to polish it. (if it succeeded it would have been truly amazing) But unfortunately they failed it miserably. Now I only await Guild Wars 2. SWTOR doesn't seem to be all that amazing, but I give that one credit that Bioware is trying hard as hell. Let's hope EA keep their noses out for once.

EDIT: Also to the OP. I have seen an entire guild go to Rift and come back going "well we just wasted a lot of money, let's get ready for the Firelands."

They could start offering free transfers to and from selected servers.

Actually, "troller" is perfectly legitimate. In fact, that was the original term.

And I think he's just a Rift fan, not a Trion employee.

It was just a friendly little jab at his manner which made him come off to me almost as if he were the leader of a focus group. An almost faux warmth and friendliness that a salesman adopts when they are trying to get you to buy something from them.
