I've been around on these forums for a while, and I've witnessed many an individual thread about Gay Rights, Pro-life V Pro-choice, Free Speech, and a list of things that really come down to a single question
'Do people have the right to do (act X)?'

Now Escapist, if rules and laws and bi-laws and all that jazz came down to you saying 'yay or nay', what rights would you give your people?

Now the question is a bit vague, so I'll give a few option to kick start:
Should people be given free reign to do as they wish?
Should people be chained to floors in dark and desolate rooms?
Will everyones decisions be made for them?

I personally, believe in a looser rules, more Freedom of speech, but I'm not a fan of people being able to break laws under religious protection, so I may make changes there...
I have lots later, but I'll hear from you first
So what say you?
Do we have the right amount of Rights?

Our rights are wilfully ignored by the authorities. We're just told we have them and they are occasionally enforced to try and make us think that they are somehow present. Just look at the Patriot Act or the Terrorism act in the UK.

Rights are supported by government to the extent against which the populace would uprise if they were not. Of course there is a rubber band effect of governments trying to find the balance.

EDIT:

What do you mean, could you elaborate on laws under religious protection?

I think a person's rights are very easy to define: "Your freedom ends where the next guy's begin."

Easy to define, but hard to fully understand. I'm still working on it. Where exactly are the limits between one person and another? It's trickier than you'd think at first glance.

IT is tough, where does the right of someone's freedom of expression come, compared with the rights of the rest of us not having to listen to him read the bible thru a loudhailer in the middle of town.

Sadly we wouldn't need half the laws we have if people had a basic level of respect for their fellow man, but stuff gets in the way.

We wouldn't need 'noise abatement officers' if people would turn their stereo down and keep it down when asked at 1am for example.

However, it of course is not half as bad as the print media would have you believe.

I'm all for banging up the 'hate' people tho, whether it's religious, sexual or whatever. That'll work both ways too. That link recently of the black guy demanding the death of all white people, and a roomful of people not telling him he's a fuckwit, was scary stuff.

We need to lock people up, even if it's just for a week, for minor offences, just so they have time to consider if it was worth being an arse.

Also, off topic, but if prisons are such holiday camps, why doesn't Littlejohn or one of his type volunteer to go in for a month and review the luxury apartments?

All people should have the right to what ever they want as long it doesn't hurt anyone else in theory. But that not real life so I say for every dollar you steal you do an hour of time for the first offence and it doubles with each offence. So people don't get 9 months for stealing $20 dollars worth of stuff. But if your time is longer than your life expectancy you get death.
