I did have a quick look to see if this has been covered, but I saw nothing.
Lonesome George was the last known living Pinta tortoise. He was reported to have died yesterday morning. It may not be the most significant extinction of a subspecies considering it was pronounced functionally extinct a while ago. Despite effort to reproduce, there would never be a pure bred Pinta tortoise after George died.
I do think it's kind of sad. George was a symbol for conservation. Of course those efforts will continue without him.
