From the AP - Maurice Sendak, the author who introduced millions of children worldwide to mischievous Max and his monsters in "Where The Wild Things Are," died Tuesday, his publisher said. He was 83.
"I refuse to lie to children," he said in an interview with the Guardian last year. "I refuse to cater to the bullshit of innocence."
Let's lift a glass in toast to the guy who knew that for kids, emotions get too big for words. Give 'Where The Wild Things Are' a read and watch how the pictures get bigger and bigger as the words on the page get fewer and fewer. If ever there was a guy who knew what kids were about, it was he.
Sendak's Legacy : Helping Kids 'Survive Childhood' is a nice read, too : http://www.npr.org/2012/05/08/152250644/sendaks-legacy-helping-kids-survive-childhood
