Rise of the Triad: Still Ludicrous After All These Years

The "Rebooting a Classic" production diary takes an inside look at the development of the new Rise of the Triad.

I don't remember Apogee's Rise of the Triad in any great detail. It was a long time ago, and my frustration with all the jumping bits, whirling razorblades and other such irritations led me to give up on it long before the finish. But the shooting parts were a lot of fun and featured a level of insane gibbage that took the game above and beyond what most of its contemporaries dared consider.

Based on the "Rebooting a Classic" production diary, the new Rise of the Triad will bring that same kind of crazy gameplay to modern audiences, with a few "improvements," like, say, the ability to saw a man in half with a pair of .45s. And any game that lets you do that can't be all bad, right?

Interceptor is also getting a helping hand from Apogee Software, including "key team members" who worked on the original game. "The best part was, we were given the creative freedom to take the original design to the next level and create a game we would want to play today," COO Khaled Ibrahimi explained. "We set out to mix some of today's modern gameplay techniques and visuals and combine that with [the] innovative and ridiculous design from Rise of the Triad, and see what we could come up with."

The big question is whether or not this kind of thing will fly with contemporary gamers. Serious Sam 3 did well for itself but it's a bit of an anomaly, and while the years between The First Encounter and BFE may not have been overly fruitful, they at least kept the game relatively fresh in the minds of the audience. Rise of the Triad is much closer to being a brand-new game, and it's not the sort of thing that Halo or Call of Duty fans are used to.

Rise of the Triad is currently slated to come out for the PC in early 2013. Find out more at riseofthetriad.net [http://riseofthetriad.net/web/app.php].

Either I never played the original, or it didn't leave much of an impression on me at the time. I think I played the shareware versions of most FPSs back then.

This game has two things bugging me:

1) Iron sights - Fast paced shooters don't need them.

2) Graphics - For a PC exclusive, it doesn't look very good.

Yeah... No. I'd much rather load up the old Quake with some new texture packs than slog through this. The reloading and hand-related animations look terrible.

He reloaded two .45 pistols by dropping the magazines into the air and then slamming the guns themselves on top. What's not to like?

I'm gonna keep a close eye on this. It looks like a welcome change from Call of Battlefield: Yearly Rehash.

Oh, the gesture itself is badass, no question about that - but the hand model looks iffy. Look at the rifle reload animation and the way the left hand holds the clip.

I dunno. I'm a huge nag about these things because a buddy of mine is a professional animator. We've known each other since we were kids and I have some of his movement-in-games related niggles. The way the fingers are closed on the clip seems really uncomfortable.

Wait, there's still an Apogee software? It's been so many years but if those guys are taking a stab it again then I'll certainly keep my eyes open for this.

The whole thing looks janky so far, but that's likely because its still in development. This is a dev dairy, after all, the thing's probably barely entered beta from the looks of it.

Chances are it will release like this and get berated accordingly. But yeah, this is very much a "beta is beta" situation and everything shown will no doubt be polished. That's how it usually is with videos like this. They're only showing the first level - chances are that's all they even have. Most demo videos are just that, demonstration videos, and I've never found it proper to complain about polish this early.

But, yeah, if it's this crap at launch I'll be eating my words, eh.

Just tell me the gun that shot our a rocket that fell to the ground and exploded into an expanding wall of fire that torched people into charred skeletons that would then collapse into a little pile of ash will be in it!

Panic! Chaos! What is this!?

There fixed it!

I had to reload the Captcha over 20 times before it worked!

If it has the flamewall and drunk missiles, I'm sold (as long as it's also a decent game, of course).

I was just playing this a few months ago and... it doesn't look that bad in comparison. I don't know what the hell you all are on about.

...what franchise?

Aw, man, I loved the original. Firebomb, all day every day.

...even if I did always have a will of iron, but knees of jello.

I remember the first time I found the plasma cannon, I was running down some stairs into a little secret room and spraying a guy with double machine guns when I picked up the cannon with the fire button held down...

Everything in the room was vaporized

everything

It still cracks me up XD

I think it looks pretty neat. Though I'm starting to see a trend where it's either full-on classic shooters being "revived" or something, or modern shooters just doing their whole...being boring, thing. I'd be much more excited to see a new IP be made, where it uses the advantages of modern hardware while still giving a sense of player control and freedom, rather than just some classic shooter coming back to make some sort of stand against modern games.

But ah well, thats off topic. Point being, i'm definitely looking forward to this, it looks just a bit silly.

This game used to make me so nauseous. I had to limit my playtime to 30 minutes or so. At first I thought it was the gore for the time but it was probably the FoV.

It looks like a lot of fun, but the graphics look kind of dated. Like it should have come out in 2009 or something.

Still, I'll have to keep an eye open for when it comes out.
