I have made this thread for a few reasons.
1. To see what the general Escapist's view on the Drug is
2. To tell my story of the drug.

First things first...A little introduction of the drug, since many people may not of heard of it.
Okay, Roacutaine is an acne drug (pill form), Acutane is a powerful, "last resort'' medication for severe acne, it?s called 'Acutaine' in the U.S. In the U.K you can get it from a dermatologist or a hospital for free (I think you have to pay in the U.S) It?s a very controversial drug due to its many side effects, below I have listed some.

The most common side effects are Conjunctivitis (``pinkeye''), dry or fragile skin, dry or cracked lips, dry mouth, dry nose, itching, joint pains, nosebleed

The less common side effects are Bowel inflammation and pain, chest pain, decreased night vision, decreased tolerance to contact lenses, delay in wound healing, depression, fatigue, headache, nausea, peeling palms or soles, rash, skin infections, stomach and intestinal discomfort, sunburn-sensitive skin, thinning hair, urinary discomfort, vision problems, vomiting
In women Acutane can cause severe birth defects, including mental retardation and physical malformations, a woman must not become pregnant while taking it. If you are a woman of childbearing age, your doctor will ask you to sign a detailed consent form before you start taking Acutaine.

Here is more information on the stuff if you?re interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaccutane#Adverse_effects

So Right now I guess you?re thinking that this stuff sounds horrible but here is my story. Okay I remember being around 14 and most other kids having a few spots here and there, I however had absolutely none, perfect skin.

When I was half way through 15 I started getting them bad...I mean face, neck shoulders chest and most painfully, the back. My first (and worst) decision was to go buy some Clearasil; all it did was dry out my skin painfully and didn?t help the spots go away.
My mum then insisted that I go see a doctor so I did, I got some antibacterial wash for about 2 months (Oxi...somehting) it didnt work. It didn?t dry like the Clearasil but it didn?t help at all, ruined my clothes too.

The doctor then suggested that I try Roacutaine, Which after a few blood tests I finally did, I started taking it and about a week later my face was like a desert, so dry it was unreal. My lips also became chapped and I got a few headaches. The worst of it for me was the Nose bleeds as I often woke up in my sleep and it was pretty scary at times.

The Side effects I didn?t get where the Depression (Quite the opposite when the acne began to fade) the mood swings (well just once, and it was pretty random, I dropped my toothbrush and became enraged for a few seconds), the chest pains and most of the extreme ones.

Here is me before Roacutaine aged 15 (ignore the awful pose I was dicking about)

and Here is me after Roacutaine aged 17 (New hair style and older looking etc but the main point is the skin)

so now its your turn!

Eh, your acne doesn't look like it was to bad.

It sounds like that drug stops a certain hormone to make you skin stop producing oil.

I don't now anything else that causes that many side effects other than maybe digestive poisoning. It's a dangerous game you play when you take a drug that tampers with the balance of chemicals in your body.

I don't think I'd use that unless it became a serious health issue.

Edit:Read the Wikipedia article. This stuff actually affects your bodies process of genetic expression. Scary.

Does not sound worth it and the whole 'birth defect' thing sounds really not worth it. You didn't look that bad. I would not of taken it, I mean really, does this sound like a good thing to trade your acne for?

Yeah, I know it's got peeling skin, depression, super sensitive skin, vomiting and bowel inflammation and more, but acne's way worse right? Not in my opinion, I think it's an unwise choice.

Some of those side effects sound pretty grim, I would've stayed the fuck away if I had acne.

However, I've never had it in my life. I got a bit spotty now and then, but in my 18 years I have never had bad spots :D Good diet I guess.

And to be fair, your face didnt look that bad. When I was in 6th Form a kid a few years younger than me looked like someone had sandpapered his face, but your's looks like it was pretty much clear compared to him. But like you said, if it's on your back and chest I can imagine its irritating enough to make you want to try this rather obnoxious sounding medicine.

I had really bad acne, an bit like how you described yours actually and I went through the exact same process - scrubs, creams, balms even antibiotics. Eventually found about Roacutane and started taking the stuff. It was a god-send. It took a while, but I haven't had trouble with acne since and my only side effects were the odd nosebleed.

I think the idea of the drug is that it is a MASSIVE vitamin A supplement which stops your skin producing the oils that cause acne.
I think the odds of becoming suicidaly depressive are a million to one.

There is quite a lot of Photoshopping-shenannigans going on in the second pic, so I don't think it'd be completely fair to make a comparison. That said, there does seem to be a definite difference between the two pictures, and not just the hair and such.

Your acne didn't look to bad. I wouldn't want to use Roaccutane. The side effects are worse then what it's supposed to cure.

OP needs a haircut, and to uninstall Photoshop.

OT: Never had acne, although I've known people who had far worse cases of it than OP, about the face anyway.

You sure you just didn't outgrow acne?

I had some problems, but now I'm also 17 (and half) and I have no acne problems. On the other hand, my cousin is almost 25 and still has acne...
