Little trick i used a couple years back, i had to traverse a certain train station positively infested with pickpockets a lot. I attached a cat bell to my wallet. Whenever you hear that telltale sound, tackle the guy that's running from you.

I and my friends have been approached by people a total of....I think it was five or six times.

One of my friends has lost goods once. Your phone isn't worth your life, but that doesn't mean one should hand everything over to anyone with a little bass in their voice, some are desperate, and some are just inept. It also doesn't help when they have the audacity to try and go into your pockets.

I did find it absolutely hilarious though that one of my friends actually convinced the guy that his phone was broken and useless, and he believed him! His phone was pretty good actually.

I've picked a few pockets in my day (when I was MUCH younger). Anytime there was a parade through town on the Fourth of July or for whatever reason, the assembled crowds wouldn't notice if you plucked their fat wallets out of their ass pockets. My friends and I probably lifted close to a thousand dollars that way over the course of a couple of years.

Personally, the only time I've ever had something stolen (not counting my mom's embezzlement of my childhood bank account) was when I lived in a bad neighborhood, put my clothes in the washer in the laundry room, and came back to find someone had stolen them. (and people wonder why I'm a snob and hate poor people---that's [a big chunk of] why.)
