This is incredibly terrifying. The 18mph clip is nightmare material, and I just watched their 'BigDog' unit run at 5mph, and stabilise itself after being kicked. Crazy!

DARPA's next plan for this impressive piece of technology will be a "free-running" exercise to see how well the Cheetah 'bot will do untethered and on more open ground.
And then they were never heard from again.

They better give that thing some padded feet as I do not want to get impaled by the jagged edge when it chase me down! Also I know who to blame when the said scenario had become a reality!
If you put padding on their feet, you won't be able to hear them until it's too late.

Anyway, if it's not agile enough to make a proper turn or hard enough to withstand a direct attack, you can stop most charging objects with a pike braced against the ground.

Animal-based combat machines make perfect sense. After all, animals have effectively been at war with each other for billions of years. During that time, they have evolved into biological vehicles equipped to navigate on the land and through the air and water of planet Earth. It thus stands to reason that the most impressively mobile creatures in the animal kingdom should be a guide in creating our combat vehicles and other machines. We still have so much to learn from nature. The Keepers by Rick Friar talks about the future of biomimicry. Helicopters will be replaced by craft with hummingbird-like biomechanical wings. pretty much all craft besides jets will be replaced by biomimicry designs, which Friar calls in the books the Animalian Projects. It's all looking so wickedly possible, even probable
