In the end, I can't shake the feeling that the basis for "Skynet" is already here and the rest is coming.

Also, why do nations spend so much money on military technology when there's global warming, pollution, overpopulation, disease, hunger, poverty and natural resource depletion to tackle?

I suppose national security is important for all countries - but military spending does seem to be disproportionate. It's weird but it doesn't look like changing any time soon. On the bright side, military R+D is the driving force behind a lot of science and technology (that and consumer electronics) - sadly there's very little science done for science's sake.
