In the beginning there was Guitar Hero, & everybody rocked out, & the Rock-God was happy.

But something was missing, & the Rock-God created Frets On Fire [http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/].

And everybody rocked out on their PC's, & the Rock-God was satisfied.
I don't have any of the current-gen consoles so I have no idea, & would like to ask for some clarification. I understand that the Guitar Hero controllers for the PS3/XBox360 are connected via USB (or at least the wireless ones are). If anyone has tried to use the controller on a PC, or can try & play FoF (link above) with it, can you confirm that it works please?

I can't tell you which controllers in which mode work how well, but I can confirm that a PC running Frets on Fire will play like Guitar Hero, like Rock Band or like a custom hybrid of the two with an old Guitar Hero guitar and a Rock Band 2 bass controller in its USB ports.

You may have some minor issues getting the controls set up, but it's five minutes' playing around to fix it, not a big deal.

If the effects control goes batshit on you, change the effect to killswitch and set killswitch volume to 90% and while it'll still be going like a privy door with the plague in town, you won't notice.

I can indeed confirm that it works. You just need to download the drivers, configure the inputs, and you're away.

I have an Xplorer from GH2 for the xbox360 that connects via USB cable.

On windows 7 RC, all you need to do to make it work is plug it in.

(In other words, yes it's very possible to do)

There's an effects knob or lever on the guitar controller. When you use it, it either warps the sound or killswitches it, so you either get a buzzy sound or a much quieter note. The issue I was having was that it was buzzing the whole time. Switching to very quiet made it rather hard to hear anything, but how quiet it is turned out to be adjustable, and adjusting it up to 90% made it play like normal (and get a little bit louder when I twiddled that control on a long note).

Yeah, that thing ... on guitars that have it.

Rock Band 2 bass controller [http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/09/9-10-08-rb2-bass.jpg] has a little twisty knob instead. It's the one below the base of the neck.
