Rockstar Marketing Plan!!

1. Take an almost 10 year old dead series who's last sequel left a bad taste in some player's mouths and bring it back
2. Show the character has changed and is angsty by shaving his head (Splinter Cell anyone?)
3. Making multiplayer for no reason will sell our product, and DLC you can't forget DLC
4. Let's release on the same day as Diablo 3
5. ?????
6. Profit

And not saying it will be bad, but many strange decisions are being made.

You know I was actually thinking of buying Max Payne 3 the first day it came out (Something I've never done with any game whatsoever) however after hearing this I think I'll rent it first. Why? because now I'm doubting that it'll be any good. If a company has no faith in its own fucking product, and feels that it needs to pull this kind of shit to make their game worth it, then why should I have any modicum of faith in them as well? Why the fuck should I risk SIXTY OF MY FUCKING DOLLARS on a product that offers no recourse if I'm dissatisfied? Because I never play a game for the multi-player (which would put me further into the financial hole if I actually bought the danging DLC). I play it for the single player so I can get a good story like the type I've come to expect from Rockstar; not so some teenaged little shit can imply incest when I beat him, because yeah that's money well spent, 125 decibel Incest implications and muting sub 90 I.Q. assholes. Fuck you game industry, fuck you.

It left a bad taste in people mouths?

I was under the impression it was as favourably received, if not more so, as the first game. And the game was definitely a milestone for atmosphere and story telling.

But damn, it really has been almost 10 years since it was released...I must be getting old...

*quick metacritic check*

Ah well I stand corrected; perhaps I'm thinking of the film then or another series. I never did get around to the sequel admittedly.

I, too, don't get what all the negative talk is all about.

So there's gonna be DLC available for pre-order. So you need another 35 bucks if you wanna extend your gameplay. So Rockstar wants to make a profit. So what?! If you're one of the people who already pre-ordered the game, you're just gonna cancel your reservation because of THAT? The fact alone that you reserved the game means you WANT the game. No one is forcing you to get the DLC. Enjoy the game, be done with it, sell it to a friend and that's that. or enjoy the game, buy the DLC, love it hate it but its your choice, at least.

Are we seriously gonna pretend we're not gonna buy games ever again based off "principle"? Because companies are trying to rip us off? Come on, guys! It's not like this is a new thing. Online passes, DLC, skins, map packs, weapons, etc. Those are just thing the publisher sells to us to make an extra profit and I'm sure about 90% of us have participated on that.

This article is more fo Max Payne fans. I'll admit the franchise is not as awesome as it used to be. But whatever. Like I said, pre-order DLC is only for hardcore fans. This is neither good nor bad. You can simply ignore it and carry on with your life whether you own the game or not.

At least they're not as bad as Online Passes.

When the idea of DLC was still new, people would defend the industry telling all who were complaining to 'wait and see', now we have waited and seen...

... and now people tell us we cant complain because its not a new thing, its standard practise, its how things work.

Pretty sweet deal for the publishers eh ?

Beautiful End - You seem to dislike Online Passes , but to me as a PC gamer its nothing as PC titles cant really be traded in due to CD/DvD Keys and/or locking titles to specific accounts ( Steam ), DLC is far worse in general as it discourages modding and encourages trimming the game down to its core and then releasing extras as DLC in the planning phases.
You can practically see the brainstorming session... ok people this is core and this is extra, lets place all these ideas in the right areas.
In the case of Max Payne, you already know the MP will be relatively small and appeal to a limited number of players intitially, and map packs as DLC simply cause the small number of players to get divided by those who bought the pack...and those who didnt.
AvP3 had map packs as well, the players that bought those barely had a chance to play them as the number of players playing AvP3 MP were small enough as is and then limit that small number to those who had the pack... barely possible to get a game going.
