At the risk of once again sounding like a super fanboy I found the chemistry between the Chief and Cortana to be charming and amusing. Plus it really didn't get in the way.

Also the love story in Mass Effect (i.e Shepard and Ashley) I really liked because again they had charming dialouge and it just went with the flow of the story really well, look forward to seeing where they go to it from there in ME2.

There was a sort of decent love story between Alyx Vance and Gordone Freeman and I like Alyx as she is lovely. But as great as she is you can't deny that she was courting an emotionless void that is Gordon Freeman.

Seriously though, I don't hate love stories, I am a bit of the ol' romantic kind. Just as long as it isn't really, really cheesy. Also most love stories in games and movies these days have very little actual sex. Usually the sex scene being the big climax (pun not intended) after a lot of emotional character development between the two characters. That is a good kin of love story.
That said when they shoe horn it in, it's painful.

Mass Effect pulled this of brilliantly.
Game writers should take notes.
The chemistry between Shepard and Ashley was explosive, so the sex scene was only logical.

Whats the point of being a badass action hero if you don't get laid?
Perfect answer. What will you save the world for, if not a hot chick?
What if you're a gay hero?
And what if you just like like to live in the world?
Psh. Who has that mindset? :p
And if you're gay? I guess you better have a but-budd boyfriend.
Damn you South Park for making me think of that first!
I have no need for a relationship but I would save the world for videogames and books.
they are awesome, but.........

Hot chicks > videogames & books. Sorry man.
An opinion.

There is no romance between Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance.

I repeat, there is no romance between them.

Not in Half Life 2 or either of the episodes anyway.

Besides, Gordon is quite a bit older than Alyx, I'm pretty sure that she was just a child when Black Mesa happened.
Gordon was put in temporal stasis. So while chronologically, he's 30 years older than Alyx, he's physically and memorically (that's not a word, but I meant memory), they could be about the same age.

Besides, when it comes to love, age doesn't apply. Once you can comprehend what love entails and means, of course.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the stasis bit.

I wasn't saying that age should be a barrier to love, I was just pointing out that Gordon is a fair bit older than Alyx. I was just saying.

And did you imply that I don't have the ability to comprehend love?
No, I was saying that to block the people who might assume me a proponent of child rape and whatnot, since child rapists argue that "They agreed to it." I say those children don't know the implications of love yet.

I didn't mean to insult you, don't worry. ^_^

Bioware gets mentioned a lot, with good reason, but only Jade Empire and Mass Effect... How time flies - turn back time 8-9 years and you'll find the Bioware game with THE best romances - Baldur's Gate 2. Sure, it doesn't have 3D graphics or anything fancy, but the writing is superb (or better) and the characters (both romanceable and unromanceable party members) have never been matched since. Me and the girlfriend often find ourselves quoting them, and after such a long time that's not bad. On the other hand, I'd be hard pressed to remember a single line from Jade Empire, except a few choice ones relating to the Black Whirlwind or Kang the Mad. And not many of those at that.

And as for the quality of the writing - if you've heard all of Jan Jansen's lines in BG2 and STILL find him annoying, you have no sense of humour whatsoever. (He's the only gnome I've been able to stand in any RPG, but to compensate I truly adore the little guy. Not romanceable though - his heart belongs to a childhood sweetheart, who's taken up with a truly bad man in Jan's absence. Things get real nasty and hilarious all at once, eventually.:)
