How wonderfully retro!

Here we are in the age of capitalism where all kinds of modern things are being taxed, but in places like Romania the thing they need to tax is...something that goes back for centuries.

Ah well...I suppose superstitions will always exist. And as long as they do, they may be taxed. Hilariously enough, this also officially acknowledges the occult. Lulz may ensue.

This actually makes sense to me. For the "bad witches" (i.e. scheming gypsies) they will have to report their income and have it taxed. And for the good witches they'll be contributing to society via taxes just like every other hard working citizen. This is actually kind of ironic because I bought a set of Tarot cards from Hastings just two days ago.

To be clear, for those who believe that magic is not real, that is fine. It is a personal belief and opinion and just as valid as any other. Especially given that as of yet science can not give hard evidence of the existence of magic, spirits, elemental forces, angels, demons or gods. Yet people believe in these things. That is why it is faith and not science. Believing in something that cannot be conclusively proven. Faith of other people should be respected though, not ridiculed. I am not Catholic, but I respect other people who are Catholic for their beliefs and their right to believe in them. So long as they are not forcing their ways on other people. This is true for all religions, mythologies and superstitions in the world. Maybe we can't prove them right.. but on the other hand we can't prove them wrong either, usually. So having respect for what other people choose to believe is a good thing.

As far as the Romanian government allowing witch to be listed as a profession.. Why not? As mentioned, people list minister, priest or rabbi as their profession, because that's what they are. Why not witch, shaman or houngun? They should be treated the same way, and get the same sort of legal status in regards to taxation.

As far as those who call themselves witches but are really con-men? That has existed forever. It's hardly localized to such things. People have been conning other people for as long as communication has been around. Religion is a very popular way to con someone, otherwise there wouldn't be so many televangalists and they wouldn't make such disgusting amounts of money out of bilking people. I have no respect for those sorts of people regardless of what they are professing, and I am certainly glad to see such con artists be taxed heavily, at the least. Maybe you can't save someone from their own folly, but at least you can make the con men pay heavily as well.

Witchcraft? IN MY European Union?

I'm beginning to feel disconnected to the east of this place.

Then lemmie help bring that connection back by saying, let's try to remember, only the good things about Romania.

Plus look at the bright side, now whenever you're in Romania you can walk up to cute girls and say "You must be a witch, because I am enchanted."

Same thing in the States really... I mean Astrologers, Psychics, Homeopathic Practitioners, Faith Healers... all basically "magicians" known by a different name, all legally taxable professions.

So wait, you're taxing religious people? Aren't churches and stuff pretty much exempt from all taxes and getting additional grants/revenue on TOP of all that?

If it were here in the US there'd be cries of 'religious discrimination' if Wicca were recognized as an official religion.
It depends really. I don't know how these witches work in Romania, but churches in the US don't charge for their services, which is how they can get away with tax exempt status. They do rely heavily on donations and tithes, and I think some of them can rent out space for events... But you don't get a bill from your local pastor for Sunday services.

On the other hand, if these Romanian witches are working more in line with say, palmists or homeopathic healers... Then you do go to them and get charged for their services rendered. And as such would be charged taxes.

Remember that these law changes are not recognizing witchcraft as a religion, but rather a profession. Which would have more in common with say, a therapist than a preacher.

So how ,much DO these Romanian witch ladies earn anyway? Because if it is a really small sum, why bother? and why take 16% of that small sum away? How would they feed and house themselves?

It's not a small sum is it?

Woohoo! Look at all that ignorant, self righteous bias depicted not only in the news article by also by many of the commenters! Why surely they must know 100% exactly what witchcraft really is and isn't, despite getting well, absolutely no facts on the subject.

For the record, Wicca and various other pagan religions that often fall under the heading of witchcraft are just as valid and a lot older than all those monotheistic religions that tried to supplant and absorb them in their power grabs for more followers, demonizing those that would not convert as evil or satanists or what have you.

Warlock is not the term for a male witch. The term for a male witch is... witch. Warlock means 'traitor' and was coined by the Catholic church to use against men who didn't follow their views.

Magic is just as real as you believe it is. At least as real as praying for something. In fact, it's exactly the same thing, using a person's willpower to hopefully influence external events. Whether the trappings are an athame or a rosary, whether you do it in a church or a magic circle, you are still trying to use ritual and willpower to bring about a favorable change in your life.
All that I saw from this paragraph were several words like absorb, supplant, and magic.
It just gave me a weird feeling of not wanting to read.
