Like many people, I've so far really struggled to get into Rome 2. Unlike a lot of people, however, I haven't been vociferously bitching about it and its many flaws, mostly because I'm not sure why I'm struggling with it.
I absolutely loved the first Rome, it's scary how many hours I put into that as a teenager. I left the franchise alone until I picked up Shogun 2 about eight months ago, and really enjoyed that game. Rome 2 just... isn't doing it for me in the same way. I've played as Athens, and made some headway into the east, played as Brittania and taken most of Gaul, and played as Rome just enough to get Italy and half of Sicily. I like the new building system, if I'm honest, despite some glaring imbalances, and I think I like the province system. I'm indifferent to the new general system. But for whatever reason, I just have no urge to get back into it. I think it's because in all Total War games, I tend to prefer the strategic side rather than the battles themselves, and there are certain things about Rome 2's world map that are awkward, not least of which the lack of a compelling family system and the god awful faction support system.
Based on that, this may be a hard question to answer as I don't have a concrete idea of what needs to be improved. But has anyone dipped back in since the fourth patch came out this week?
For lack of a better way of phrasing it, is it better? Is it a more enjoyable experience? Or is it just another long list of under the hood number changes that have little tangible effect on the game as a whole?
