**Also, my first topic on the Escapist in well over a year of membership...**

Those of you familiar with George Orwell's fantastic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four will know about Room 101, the chamber in the so-called "Ministry of Love" in which The Party subjects prisoners to torture by whatever is their most profound fear or phobia, and in which...

...Winston, the protagonist, breaks his promise never to emotionally betray his love interest, Julia. Winston's biggest fear was rats, and in order to avoid having his face gnawed off by the furry little buggers, he screams "Do it to Julia!", signifying that the state had finally broken him. He's also forced to accept that "2+2 = 5", something which is mirrored in the TNG episode "Chain of Command" Parts I and II, which if you haven't seen I'd strongly recommend.

Picture this: for your entire life, you've been under surveillance. The Party knows all of your deepest secrets and knows all of your hopes and fears. You've been captured by the Ministry of Love, and you're about to be tortured in Room 101. What sort of horror do you think awaits you? Let's say your love interest or a family member is involved. For the sake of discussion value (and, admittedly, childish fantasy), let's say that if you manage to withstand the torture, your significant other will go free, but if you surrender, he/she will be tortured instead. How do you think you'd manage?

To start off, I'm guessing that I'd be presented with something to do with my skin (and the prospects of its removal). It's terrifying just to contemplate it. I'm fairly positive that I'd lack the will and strength of mind to withstand Room 101, but what about you?

Nice thread idea, HardlyMotivated. That book freaked me out the first time I read it.

I'm terrified of spiders and I'm claustrophobic, so locking me up in a tight chamber with those buggers would send me climbing the walls. I could probably close my eyes and try to endure the spiders, but I just can't cope with tight spaces. They could brake me pretty quickly because I'd hyperventilate and call it quits.

So what I'm basically saying is that a little box could beat me. I'm just so hardcore...

It'd probably be a padded cell with all your favourite music playing at deafening volumes - constantly for years to come.

All the things you loved to hear turned into an aural nightmare.

The only real nightmares I have ever had are of something chasing me and not being able to escape it.

I suppose they could wall me in, but without that presence that needs escaping I just don't see it having the same effect.

A Clockwork Orange style? If I survived that, I'd kill myself anyway.

I guess for me, it'd just be shadows. I'm very terrified of things getting in my head, and also of things that are unknown. If I don't know what it is, and I'm just constantly paranoid, then that'd be enough. It doesn't need to be anything in particular - anything that is a constant threat to me will eventually wear me down. I wouldn't last very long at all. After all, 'the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.'

No Room 101 for me. Just a large open space, with no visible walls. Nothing, featureless. Done in less than a minute. Less than ten seconds most likely.

The frightening thing is, despite it all - me and you would end up realising that we loved Big Brother despite our tortures. Our love for him would blind us to suicide - only when we least expect it in the future, Big Brother will then end up making us disappear.

So in a way, you never truly leave Room 101.
