Right, im using a BT homehub 1.0, and in the advanced settings universal plug and play is enabled, so the NAT type should be open. But everytime i try and play Modern Warfare 2 it says that my NAT type is strict.

This is making it incredibly difficult for me to find games to play online.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem, however it's not caused by my router.. it's caused by my internet supplier.. Yay for me.

Still, i've never experience any problems with online gaming?
Only with the Ps3 Microphone chat and webcam rooms..

Are you gaming on a PC? Make sure the UPnP service is not disabled (many misinformed people online, as well as some tweaking tools, advice to disable it since they foolishly believe it is a security risk).
The service has different names in different Windows versions, but should be recognisable.

On a console, check your console settings to see if UPnP is enabled as well if it has such an option.

Yeah your internal NAT would be set open but as Mozza said your ISP may have other NAT schemes in place. Nothing much you can do about that. Other than call and complain to your ISP or switch providers.

Gaming on a PC and im certain that the UPnP setting is enabled. I think there is a problem with my router, as it has been playing up recently anyway. Angry email to BT time! YAY!

But seriously BT have just starting throttling my connection and its annoying the hell out of me! (210 KB/s down to 30 KB/s) and yeah i know 210 KB/s sucks hard anyway, but i live in a majorly rural area. Needless to say i've already rung them up about it.

I have a BT HomeHub. For me it's always open but once every few weeks it will just change it to strict. My solution is to unplug the router at the back, let it sit for a few mins then turn it back on. Does the trick every time.

Hit reset and it should keep it Open for a few weeks, until the router decides to update itself, then you only have to reset it again.

I have a HomeHub and trust me, I've tried DMZs, Static IPs and other things I still don't have the foggiest about and the hitting reset is the easiest and all round bestest way to sort the NAT settings.

When my NAT was being stupid, I couldn't even play 1 vs 100, let alone MW2 or Halo.

The Reset button is my new best friend.

The only difference UPnP will do is make it possible for you to host.
ie. it wont help you find online games.
Basically what it does is automatic port-forwarding for the applications that supports UPnP.

UPnP IS a massive security risk.
As any trojan/virus or w/e may then easily open a port in your firewall and magically work, which it would not have been able to do otherwise.

Thanks for all the replies and everything.. i reset it a couple of days ago to no avail, and i usually unplug it too.. which still doesn't work. I think maybe im just not meant to be allowed on the internet.

Oh, so that's why I find it hard to get games!

Anyway, I play better games now...

Actually, what's a NAT type anyway and what does it mean?
