ok so i've played WoW off and on for, well for years, never really got all to into it, just played when there wasnt really anything else to do, only recently did i get a character even up to 60, so as far as thats concerned i'm not WoW obsessed, but i've always been curious of RP, i mean i've always wanted to try D&D but that also has a defined set of rules and abilities that make it simple to determine how it works, but in a MMO i've been interested in the RP because you get to run around the world and have fun without being in a dungeon everytime you play. but i've been hearing things about pickpockets and rp fighting and "god modding"(whatever that means" and well its all quite intimadating. so i guess i'm asking if its really all that complex and how does it work. i've been wanting to play on an RP server but due to lack of experience i dont wanna pop in and everyone laugh at me cuz i have no clue what to do, and i dont wanna ask for "RP Training" in an rp world cuz idk if i'd get called on for "not playing a part" or something, anyways any ideas?
(P.S. Please excuse my poor sentence fluency, grammar, and punctuation, I understand it is horrible on the eyes, but I type as I think and that's what happens. Besides if I edited everything I typed it would take an eternity.)

People on RP servers don't Roleplay...
My first WoW character was on an RP server (since I didn't really know what I was doing) and it's just like a regular one...
If you want to RP then try some forums or something, there aren't a lot of game roleplays out there...
EDIT: And by that I mean decent roleplays...

hmmm, well i like how point blank you are, and i understand there are elements where people dont participate in it, but from what ive heard (which is why i'm curious) is that some realms do get into their RP as par people who've suggested i join, i told them i've never rp'd before and they say its simple, and yet as i here more about it i see more and more things about rolls for pickpockets and such that make little sense to me, I.E. a lvl 9 rouge mugs a lvl 25 warrior and succeeds, i mean i dont get how that would work, i mean a 25 warrior would punch him in the face and laugh, or at least i would. i can understand if perhaps he picked his pocket, but how does that work when you run up to the guy and say "hey i picked your pocket wheres my money" yet again i'd feel the urge to punch him in the face. heck by the end of the day i might as well just be some guy who runs around punching people in the face. and then the talking, i mean if i gotta talk like a brit or something i'd lose my bloody mind (pun intended). i mean i just wanna know if there are regulations or if i should just jump in and hope i dont punch the wrong guys face?

I havent seen a good actual role play online ever. WoW dosent have that because you fall into a preset role in the team(your class, rouge warrior mage ECT).

That's okay, if I tried to read what you wrote it would probably cause my brain to implode.

I'm assuming from the title of your thread you are wondering why people Role Play in MMO's?

Because they want to and it's fun?

Theres your problem,

WoW definitely isn't know for it's mature community and rp can really only survive in mature communities.

Rping comes from the dd + mud days which are still around but aint as populated due to wow. There might be good rp going somewhere in WoW but I doubt it. I feel that a game with images and such graphics takes away from the imagination required in actually playing the role of some fantasy figure.

A big part of RP is grammar etc. Who wants to read:

bob smiles.

When bob could be far more creative with his word play!

Godmudding is doing something to another player that isn't open ended as you should leave your emotes open for others to respond to.

Example: Bob raises his mighty war-axe and swings it in a wide arc chopping off Joe's head, killing him instantly.

If I was joe I'd be livid, maybe I have awesome dodging skills or ruddy aware of what is going on and would evade, blocks, parry, get struck and then emote being gravely wounded?

Better places for RP (imo) are text based games or roleplaying forums. I'm less keen on forums as those places usually have 'individual' rps where the rules/theme etc is set by the OP. It usually isn't fluid or dynamic or continious. Usually the OP is a control freak who wants to yiff and won't appreciate your non-yiff rp.

I'm not aware of rules for posting links so I won't post a link however I suggest searching google for mud connect. You can find an RP game to practice and hone yer skills, they also have the same elements as the game side of WoW, i.e grinding, questing, leveling, skills, items etc etc.

It really depends on the game and the community. DDO, for example, even though it's the MMO of the definitive RP game, there's no RP community whatsoever.

In my opinion, the best MMO for RP is City of Heroes. This adds a helluva lot of variety for RP as you create a superhero with their own backstory and there is a massive combination of powers to have. There's a European and American client, each have a server where there is an extremely healthy RP community. If you get a European account, the Union server is for RP, while Virtue is the RP server for the American account.

As for Godmodding, it's when a character takes control of another players actions. For example:

John shoots his gun at Joe, hitting him in the shoulder.

To avoid Godmodding, it should be more like: John shoots his gun at Joe... And wait for the person RPing Joe to decide the result.

Also, if you do find a game with a good RP community, try find a group to regularly do it. In RP a character must develop, and thus a group makes this much easier. I play City of Heroes, and my main RP character is a bounty hunter who works with a group of heroes who specialise in taking down magical threats. Thus, by constantly RPing with a group my character develops, rather than trying to develop a character through random encounters alone.

I played WoW on an RPPVP server and I came across almost no roleplaying. The little I did come across was absolutely shat on by everyone else on the server, but it all seemed to be pretty poor anyway. If you're looking for RP stay away from WoW.

If you're looking for RP on WoW, the only two servers that are really left standing are Moon Guard and, more recently, Wyrmrest Accord.

The RPers on WoW tend to be...clique-ish, really, so you'll have to do a bit of looking to find a good group.

Well, haveing done RP on WoW alot. It can be done very well, and very poorly, and changes from encounter to encounter. The problem is that everyone has there own idia of how to do RP. I used to pay on Moonguard in a guild called "The Stormwind Guard" and I had allot of fun, the people doing it where pritty good and I had allot of fun. Most problems stemed from the use of a game mod callled "Gryphon Heart Items" (think I spelled that wrong) that was practicly mandatory in the guild. It allowed for someone to make their own wow items. Some where very good and enhansed the RP. But it was used to make items that use modern day tech. This did not sit well with people.

Here is how I will put it. Its big, its complicated, and I found that it was fun 50-80% of the time. (being able to phisicly interact with the world in wow is a big part of alowing someone to get into it.) And yes, it will be confuseing at first but you have to start somewhere. My advice, go make a charicter on moonguard, and contact an authentic looking guild. And for god sake be humble, no one likes a new kid on the block who is a jackass.

I'm a proud rper, on WoW. Generally, though, people avoid it due to the stigma. RpPvP servers aren't really the best choice, though I do have several characters on Emerald Dream. Argent Dawn is a halfway decent one. I really only rp with a few friends online and have really only ran into a few roleplayers.

Mostly Blood Elves, though. I guess everyone just likes being the haughty prick character.

I wouldn't touch WoW with a 40 foot pole. I do however understand you desire to get into some kind of MMO RP action. I would love to do the same but wont for two reasons.
1) I don't think I could stop once I got into it
2) From what I have heard from my RP mates, RPing in MMO's is extremely difficult. The best way to go about it is with some of those free ones like Ragnarok. But again, I have not done it so I can't confirm or deny its validity.

I can however suggest doing what I do. Get together with your mates once a fortnight and RP old school style. You know, in the same room :D
It is a great excuse to get together with your mates and have a bit of fun doing it. We don't stick to the standard hard down the line formula that alot of others do, our sessions/universes are far more open in how to interact with the environment as well as the type/rules of the universe itself.

So THATs where they all went...

Before NWN 2 came out they were all on NWN 1. NWN 2 came out and there were so few mods for so long that I began to doubt that they would transition. I figured that they would have the same issues that I did with NWN 2. I guess I figured wrong.
