I've been on these forums for a while now, but have not ventured into the "RP Section" I know it stands for Role-Playing but that's the extent of my knowledge really. I'm very interested to get involved with this just to see what it's like, anyway:
can someone explain what it is and how you start/contribute to an RP thread and what the rules/etiquette/slang/culture surrounding it are etc.
Cheers.
Despite there being basic guidelines, that only fills you in on exactly that: Basic guidelines the mods want us to follow. Basic advice i'd give would be to get involved in a few before you start you're own. it takes a bit of getting used to all the things you need to do. Basic rules, written or un-written are simply not to godmode or trenchcoat. Godmoding could be doing things so unrealistic that its almost painful to read. Things such as survivaing an explosion you were right on top of, or running on the ceiling to escape bullets. Trenchcoating is equipping you're character with enough ammo, guns and equipment to rival the doom guy, and both are relatively easy to avoid once you know what they are.

Depends on the RP itself, and really varies from RP to RP, depending on what content they want. Rules are stated in the original posts, and vary from RP to RP.
Slang also varies, although it's usually explained during the RP. If it isn't, simply ask, I'm sure just about anyone who posts will be glad to explain.
Etiquette. All posts should be in-character and mostly on-topic. Any posts done out of character should be labeled as such, like so:
Blah blah, out-of-character statement.
Blah blah, out-of-character statement.
Culture is a long one. Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role_playing] does better at explaining it than I would.
As far as how to start or participate, just jump in, read the rules, and ask around. I'd be happy to invite you to my RP. It's my first one to host, so we'll both be a little nooby together. Regardless, to help out:

Stick Figure War [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.62966] - Image-based stick figure war. Go in, cause some havoc.

Malleus Malefactorum [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.70783] - A Warhammer 40k RP based on being on a foreign planet with no back-up. Probably makes more sense to a 40k-fan, which I'm not. Otherwise I'd go into more detail, sorry.
Current Status - In-Progress
Apologies if I've missed anyone, I just grazed over the list quickly. Hope this clears some things up for you.
EDIT
Anarchemitis brings up a really, really good point. RP Guidelines [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/362.63498.547006] thread has a lot of good information to read-over really quick to get quick answers to some common questions. It's not perfect, but it does help.
What you want to do is look for one that says "Sign ups in progress" or something along those lines. You then read the first post, which will run you through the rules and regulations of that RP. Once that is done you create your character and wait for it to start up.
