got lost odyssey and mass effect 2 recently, both are amazing.
Well Mass Effect 2 isn't turned based, but still a great action RPG.
And as to why there haven't been many turn based RPGs... well I have no clue.

If I want a turn based RPG I just go and play Fire Emblem on my gameboy. It keeps me happy.

And the reason there aren't as many anymore is because there's only so many things you can do to make it new.

Anyways, I already have FF IV-VI emulated on my computer. And I already planned on getting Persona, because I actually just got an old, second hand PS2 recently.
Hey, congrats on getting the PS2! /high five
I'm also thinking about emulating FF IV, since the final boss in the DS version appears to have been ridiculously strengthened. I can't seem to defeat him, even at level 99.
What do you think? Should I just stop complaining and keep trying, emulate it, or buy the GBA remake? (I heard the GBA version had some extra goodies and bosses thrown in.)

I haven't seen Lost Odessey anywhere, and I had no idea ME2 was on the PS3.

Well, after playing FF XIII, I'm kinda traumatised now, and it made me think:
Why haven't I seen an old fashioned, turn based RPG in a while? Fallout 3 and most other recent RPG's are good, don't get me wrong, but I kinda want something turn based now. Does anyone know of any good RPG's that are turn based on the PS3?

For discussion, have you played any good RPG's recently?
from Pm's and the other thread, I don't know that my suggestion would even be what you're looking for.

If you're "okay" with more hack'n'slash, team turn-based, I'd recommend "temple of elemental evil", but it's on PC.

I'd like to see more
That sounds like fun! Characters doing things outside of combat, starting families, losing a war, dieing, and having the kids commence guerilla warfare against the duchy. Sounds like what you need to create a good RPG.
- or your example of the Persona games.

IMO, "hack and slash" sells well - and is thus the most common type of game - because of "least common denominator" - it's elemental and easy to relate to. Sex and violence, ya know.

I'm coming up blank, may your post bear further fruit.
I may keep an eye on it myself, see if I get any good recommendations out of it myself.

Didn't play FF14, not sure why it affected you that way - and i probably don't want to.

Aren't almost all JRPG's turn-based?
The last 3 Final Fantasy games haven't been, they made an amazingly dull MMO, a just plain amazing WRPG style game then a quite good SRPG

Anyway OP: I haven't played 3 but Disgaea is pretty good, should give that a try. I saw something I've been meaning to get but haven't got around to as well, Resonance of Fate I think it's called. I can't say if it's good or not but it certainly looks good.

So, I'm alone in the whole "hating Final Fantasy 13" Thing then

No, a lot of people didn't like the linearity of it or the fact that it took so long for the paradigm system to go from boring to strategic.

I was just kidding about the FF 13 thing. It was just mediocre to me, but that's because I was looking for a FF game with combat isn't boring within the first hour and a story that made you feel like you were actually doing something besides wheeling boring characters around to start cutscenes.

Relating, perhaps , to our other thread, I find any combat system boring if there isn't a good chance of losing (or at least a suspension of disbelief of it )

Also, IMO, most game seem to think waves and waves of god-awful boringly-easy encounters against mooks is "fun" - to me it's a grind.

I'd rather have a few, challenging, absolutely losable fights ( like Street fighter series )
than endless fights that I have to win and feel like padding after the 334th time i've seen this monster type.
( a big way "transformers" let me down, if i may ).

Again, tastes vary.

LOL!!!

Valkyria Chronicles is good. Get it.
Nailed it. I own the game, but haven't started it yet. However, it's the only one I can think of that is still turn based and meets your other standard of being on the PS3. No one likes turn base anymore, which is sad if you ask me. If the people behind Suikoden would get their act together...
If you have a Wii, you can try and find the Fire Emblem game for it (and the GameCube Fire Emblem). Otherwise, I'm afraid you're out of luck.

Odd...I was just thinking about starting FFVIII again (for the tenth time I think) earlier this evening.
