RPG games, as a child.

So, I started a newgame+ on dragons dogma, this time as a feral child. And something I noticed was that in some ways the game made a lot more sense.

It's suddenly in character for me to sneak around and steal, be sent on menial fetch quests, to sprint around everywhere and be overlooked by npcs and have lone bandits attack me, for people who have seen my deeds to ask for my opinion as a chosen one while others dismiss me completely.

The menial fetch quests the chosen one makes in RPG games can be a bit of a hiccup point, I might do it more often. Could rpgs start introducing an aging mechanic, or just adjust the menial tasks to fit into the character arc better?

Just a thought.

I always thought of the menial tasks/bodyguard quests as things required by every adventurer to keep the cash flow and support the adventurer lifestyle. Because weapons are expensive in that game, at least the good ones.

Also, how long do you want the story to go on? Some games do timeskips where your characters goes from child to teen to adult. The aging mechanic is only thought of if it fits the story, like Fable 2. The Sims do aging mechanics and have timelines but those games aren't designed for an end.

They could remove the menial tasks, and make cool quests instead, that would defineately be preferable imo.

Eh. I take issue with it in actual roleplay, too- I thought the idea of games/fantasy was a form of escapism (hurr). Why would I want to leave my boring life filled with menial jobs to pick up a slightly more exciting life filled with even more menial jobs?
