I just got this program, it is so cool. Just on the 30-day trial period, but I'd say I'll buy it because I want to pay the people who made it. It's great! Anyone use RPG Maker XP or VX?

Tell me ALL about your experience with it. I want this to be my new hobby.

So far I have a dude that starts at his house, and he can explore a little island and fight Slime! YEAH! I MADE MY OWN SLIME! Hehe! This is so awesome.

It's a cool little program. I've had tremendous fun playing with it when I was younger.

You should check out some of their community sites. Some of the stuff people do with it is amazing. I remember seeing someone making a Legend of Zelda game with it. Looked and played just like the old gameboy ones. It was amazing.

I remember an RPG Maker from way back on either PS1 or 2. I diddled around with it for a bit, and I was intrigued, but I started playing something else and never went back to it.

I believe I had it where you played as a hermit in the wilderness, complete with log cabin, and the enemies were all animals. That's about as far as I got before I was distracted.

I should look it up again.

I have tried it once but i rather sticks to programing, anyway I really love FF6-like games made on it, games like Ahrimans Prophercy, Ara Fell or Broken Hearts(CZ). I love simple graphic, MIDI (at least i think its MIDI) music and storylines, that can be simple yet epic. Good thing about it is that you can fully focus on game and story aspect because you cant really change graphic and you dont have to do as much work as you would by programing(as fas as I know there is some scripting but you dont have to use it). Really good program if you want to make good RPGs with least code as possible.

me and my friends have used RPG Maker 2003, XP and VX for years... but we're doing a Game Programming/Design course now, so we don't use those "simple" tools anymore :p

but it's a great and easy way to make games if you don't have any programming experience ;)

I've been goofing around with RPG Maker 2000 for... wow, ten years now. Someday I'll even finish a game.

I love RPG maker. I got into it when I was about 10 years old and have been making games ever since. I would recommend getting into Gamemaker if you are going to pay for a game engine as a hobby. If you are only interested in making RPGs, I would stick with RPG maker. Getting the framework for an RPG down requires a lot of programming. I don't have much experience with VX but either 2003 or XP are really good.

Have fun and when you think you get these down you should try moving on to Gamemaker as your next step to making different genres of games. Gamemaker is best at making scrolling shooters and platformers.

Sitting in my XNA class right now. Going to be making XBOX games. w00t!

RPG maker is a great little thing I have, the only problem is it needs time to get good things out of it. But is enjoyable never the less.

I have it, haven't played around with it for some time.

The sad thing is that outside of the pack resources, it seems like it gets harder to come by resoures on the net these days, and I suck at spriting.

Other than that, it's really fun, since I've managed to make a small entertaining game on it. However I need a tutorial everytime I want to make something more than simple (cutscene/events after some conditions are met).

I which I had more time/someone to guide me through it and i would finish my JRPG game I have fully scripted.

I'm all for people making their own RPG's but RPG Maker just isn't the way to do it xD

I've tried it out of laziness but it just isn't involving enough. At most it's just a big spriting and level design exercise, and not a very good one at that :p

I'm sure it's great starting place for people who want to jump straight in and get a taste of game design. If you want to make something you can call your own though you'd have to step a bit higher or get deep into RPG Makers script, which is probably more hassle than it's worth.

Anyone looking to go one higher try out Gamemaker or Flash. I jumped straight into Flash, it's supposedly harder but it's a ton more shiny and flexible :p

I've used them all. 2000, 2003, XP and VX. They're quite fun to play around with. My favorite is 2000 but it doesn't work on Vista sadly.

RPG Maker is pretty sweet in concept, but the sad truth is that I've never seen a single good RPG Maker game.

I worked with RPG Maker 2K3 for a long time until the resource site i was using got shut down for legal reasons... Which sucks because while the majority of the stuff on it was original open work made by users, there was a small bit of FF GBA rips some prick uploaded and they got shut down for it. The original owner of the site said he was going to restart the site but that never ended up happening. Which is sad.

I really liked it. I liked 2k3 the most because it was easier to work with variables since there were negative ones. Its visual graphics are the problems. Not the quality mind you but the quantity. Its incredibly limited.

I was making a pretty sweet game to. Instead of leveling and buying weapons you gathered souls and upgraded yourself as well purchased items that acted as attacks. I even managed to make a couple cut scenes. It was a neat little experiment.
