Speaking of characters, Dragon Age has some of the best (and most funny) characters I've every hadd the pleasure to fight beside. Its the main reason im playing.

But it always feels like there just isn't enough. They only get one quest, one romance. And at least in Modern RPGS, its always with you..

Kasumi? I finished ME2 and I don't remeber a Kasumi..
Kasumi is a DLC character, so you might not have had her installed. She does get a brief mention in one of the news reports on Ilium, but other than that you need her DLC bought and installed.

The Baldur's Gate series also featured romance between NPCs. It wasn't very well-received in general terms, but it was an interesting concepts. And chatter on the BioWare forums seems to indicate there may be some plans for the main character's sister to have a romance arc (no, not with the PC).
Her being your "sister" is kinda flimsy. I mean, how related are they by DNA anyway? Different mothers and their father was a God of Murder who we've already seen can take different forms. I understand how they can be classed as siblings as Bhaalchildren, but I question the actual genetics behind it.
Sorry, should've clarified. The sister in question is Bethany, from Dragon Age 2. She's the one who may be involved in romances with other NPCs. She and Hawke (the PC) are siblings with the same set of parents. Their father is an apostate mage and their mother lives in Lothering. Imogen is a separate character altogether, from the Baldur's Gate series. The most notable NPC-NPC romance in BG was between Jaheira and Khalid.

Ah right, that explains much. I am planning to go through it again, might buy it.

I'm not sure if it was just a mod or not but I vaguely recalling hearing about a Haer'Dalis/Aerie romance in Baldur's Gate 2, though that never played out for me since I never had space for Haer'Dalis and Aerie was my *****.
I dragged them along to test this out and it worked. But I'd been playing a male character and Haer'Dalis got all defensive so I had to let him go >.>

Apart from that all the others I know have been named already.

Im not talking explicitly about sex mind you. Just that these interesting characters well.. they seem to focus so much on YOU when I believe they are interesting enough regardless.

Can't say I've played Jade Empire. But in both KOTOR's, the only romance(so to speak) is involving you.
Jade Empire is worth a playthrough, I throughly enjoyed it, actually loved the game.

NPCs having their own lives would take the "you are the end-all be-all of the world" feeling away from the player, and sadly, there are plenty of people out there who want to feel coddled and special and wonderful when they're escaping into game worlds.

Because no matter how much we rail against it, there ARE a fair few people for whom gaming is an escape from their own insignificance---having even the video girls tell them they're already romantically involved might just push them over the edge.

Well, there are apparently people who think Joker and EDI are romantically involved.
Now, though I think those people are a little loopy, the characters certainly progressively get along much better.
