Woe for the day of the RTS .... Is it just me or have RTS and Civilization games just been going down the toilet? Every new RTS I've bought has really been dissapointing. They always don't flow very well, have labrynthian mechanics, or are just plain annoying to play.

So what is your most recent favorite RTS/Civ game? Or, if you only like the classics, what would you like to see most in the newer RTS/Civ games?

The newest RTS that I like playing is Sins of a Solar Empire. It combined the ease of play that older RTS's have with simple building mecahnics and unit creation, massive army combat, and a very cool concept (conquering space).

Ignoring that game, what I miss most from the classics is solo story play. I haven't seen a new game yet that actually has a real solo storyline the player can go through like Starcraft or Warcraft did.

Eh. I loved CnC 3 Kanes Wrath and Red alert 3(and I have them for the 360) and they had nice campaigns. My favorite one is Star Wars Empire at War and it's expansion. I only wish I didn't loss the disk for it :(

Command and Conquer series is my favourite, though I will admit that Red Alert wasn't very good.

I like Company of Heroes and Rome : Total War, but nothing can ever live up to the best RTS of all time - Age of Mythology.

Damn that was a fantastic game.

I honestly can't decide my favourite RTS, I absolutely loved Halo Wars (see, console RTS will never be as good as PC RTS, but Halo Wars was the prime example of console RTS done right. It came damn close to PC standard, methinks...). I also loved the Age of Empires series and all the Dawn of War games greatly. However, I kind of owe it all to Total Annihilation, since that got me into the RTS genre in the first place. I actually had a free copy of the full game given away with a bunch of other software programs back when my parents first got a computer with Windows 98, I think it was. Amazingly, the same CD that worked on Windows 98 still runs on my Vista laptop now with absolutely no compatibility or performance issues. Which is always a good thing, eh? :D

Dawn of War. Although I do prefer games like Dark Crusade and Soulstorm to DoW2; I personally think losing the buildings, listening posts and stuff was a bad idea for tactical defense. And what use do the Tyranids have for Requisition and Power anyway?

I personally think Halo Wars was a failure. RTS games belong on PC, not consoles. I find it illogical for an RTS to be specifically designed for a console.

OT: Red Alert 3 isn't bad as well.

I must say that it interests me to see Age of Empires on here so much. It's actually Age of Empires 3 and Civilization 4 that triggered me making this thread. I bought both of those games and really found them lacking.
(Though I guess I could see something likeable to others in Age ...)

Anytime, for the record I usually play as the space marines. But talking like an ork is just so much fun, its a shame that warhammer online runs so poorly on my computer.

I used to play AoE 2 all the time that was a good one, then I got age of mythology, and it only had the three races and I like a bit more customization. Recently I have DoW2 on my comp, its fun, different, more like and rpg than an rts but still a fun game, I never played toomuch of the original but i really want to grab it.

The only civ games I have played are 2 and 3, I really woudlnt mind reinstalling them, they were pretty solid. How is 4, ive heard good but I was just wondering how it compares to 2 and 3

Sins is a really good game although the lack of campaign was a little annoying but the game was altogether a solid rts game. I have yet to get the two expansion packs and I have been wondering how those are.

But all time favorite rts, easy, Kingdom under fire Heroes. Best. Game. Ever. Hard campaing, challenging but not impossible. Amazing fun multiplayer, skill needed and tactics much appreciated. Hoping KUF2 will live up to its greatness, but I have my doubts after cicle of doom.

It's the british(i use the word lossely) accent i think that does it. Get to da killy-spot!!

Tau or Space Marines for me and sometimes Chaos or eldar. Very rare as the last one and only when i'm in a bad mood for Chaos. 6 Units of Khorne Beserkers anyone?

My favorite new RTS would be Empire: Total War.
Sure the battle AI is crap, but I just love the time era and the campaign is still really fun.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I dsay my fav is age of mythology with dow series and coh series coming in a close second followed by world in conflict, sins was good but I didnt like how it was focused on multi player since I have a hard time playing rts games multi player. C&C series is also fun, altho somehow C&C 3 just felt really bland.

RTSes have fallen in disfavor since people realized turn based strategy is much better.

There's an old PC game called Seven Kingdoms: The Frythan Wars that I hold very dear to my cold, black heart. It's got some interesting ideas in it.
