So I bought the THQ pack off steam during that delightful sale thinking it was a good mix between familiar and the unknown. The bundle in question includes a handful of RTS games, a genre I have in the past avoided like the plague but I figured I'd give it another shot. With a healthy metacritic score of 93 I figured there was no way I could go completely wrong starting with Company of Heroes. I went into the game with a positive mindset thinking it would be awesome to have complete control over my armies of doom and awesomeness. Soooooo long story short I play for about 3 hours through 4 missions on the next difficulty above normal, did damn well for a noob, and all of a sudden pfffffft. My interest fizzled. I suddenly grew tired of tedious micromanagement and simply wanted 30 Sherman tanks to use as my device of pure WWII rape. So anyways maybe someone can help me recover this genre as something fun. I'm currently downloading one of the 40k warhammerino games so maybe I'll enjoy that more but I doubt it. Should I be playing multiplayer? Starcraft II? Do I need an appreciation for 8 hour games of RISK? Am I just too impatient?

It was always amusing in Empire Earth III(?) to put in cheats so I had UFO's and giant robots verses cavemen and little armored men with swords. For some reason, they liked to blow up my futuristic ultra tanks by slinging rocks at it, though...Also, carpet bombing the ENTIRE map with nukes was fun.

...Anyway. You could always do what I do. Just build a huge wall around your base with metric craptons of turrets around it to protect it while you build up your forces, then when your legions of death have been amassed, tear down your own wall and send out your fifty tanks backed by twenty helicopters and one hundred soldiers and just march across the entire map like you own it. BECAUSE YOU DO.

tl;dr, Use cheats for instant building and/or tons of resources. (Especially when it affects the enemies, too. Have massive wars all over the place.)

Since you bought the THQ pack, that must mean you've got Dawn of War II, yes? I think that might be the one to hook you. It's like Company of Heroes in a lot of ways, except you've got control of four customizable squads of space marines capable of mowing down a ton of baddies in a short amount of time.

It's like if Company of Heroes dropped the pretense of realism and just made itself as awesome as conceivably possible. Definitely give it a whirl if you're looking to be sold on RTSes.

I don't know if you have more money to spend but I highly recommend Starcraft 2. Before the beta, I had no interest in RTSes either.

THQ Pack? Play Dawn Of War. Lots and lots of Dawn Of War. And Dawn Of War 2. Company Of Heroes with WH40K=A decent game. I disliked it. I like COH though.

Just be patient. Soon you'll enjoying sending a crapload of Paratroopers behind enemy lines, with your friend sending his tank army in the front, you have just created mayhem!

Personally, I'm not big on just random multiplayer matches. (Probably because I'm still new to RTSs as a whole, so I get owned pretty often) If you have a friend who has anything you do, jump on Vent or something, it makes it a hell of a lot more fun. If you end up getting StarCraft II, I'd play ya, since we're pretty much on even ground.

I dunno. I'm in the same boat as the OP. I own Company of Heroes and have no interest in buying another; but I just don't know what I'm doing wrong in CoH. I simply can't multitask with all the different places germans are trying to mess me up, and I start to run low on troops very quickly. Plus, there are nowhere near enough readily available ways of defeating a tank; especially a goddamn panzer.

Play men of war. Seriously. I get tired of saying this. All queries shall be answered, and your consiousness shall evolve. Fellow men-of-warrers (if you exist), help me out. Oh, and the voice acting is so unbelievably bad it's hilarious.

"Armor like that... will take us... all the way to Berlin!"
Brilliant.
Just Brilliant.

Anyway, video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWYjCPhzKaI
(not mine, but the one that best captured the feel.)

BUY. THIS. GAME.

Why should I care whether or not you like RTS games?

Either you enjoy them or you don't.

Buy World in Conflict. Seriously. Awesome, fast-paced gameplay, US versus USSR action and (amazingly) a genuinely moving and engaging story. Oh. And tactical nuclear strikes. There are those too.

I would also definately get Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 if you want RTS's to be fun. It's fun, frantic, fast and unbelievably camp. It's awesome! Oh and it has ARMOURED ATTACK BEARS.

from my experience, there are two different types of rts players, there are those who overobsess on like one guy at atime and get nothin dun (me....) and those who play it as pros and go crazy. Honestly, i love rts's but (for me in particular) u really gotta take time with them to hav fun, otherwise u kinda hav to like rapidly do everythin with them and that really duznt sound that relaxin.

If u really can be bothered goin oldstyle, grab age of empires 2, classic that gets u in pretty well, either that or go dawn of war 2. Yeh dawnie 2 focuses more on combat than base buildin so ud probs have more fun with it

You should enjoy DoW, I'm playing Soulstorm at the moment because Sisters of Battle are totally my shameful nerd fetish, it's fairly action packed, has decent voice acting, you can get some pretty awesome battles in it and TANKS.

The Imperial Guard are your Tank Army, if you want that.

I want Starcraft 2...
Anyone know when the beta is re-opening?
I loved it.
Just saying.

OT: Starcraft 2 when it comes out.

Try starting with age of empires 2, or warcraft 2/3. Those are what I started with and loved it. Also the original command and conquer.

Side note: I tried company of heroes and didn't like it as much as other RTS'. It was still fun, but just didn't control or feel like traditional RTS'.

i'd recommend command and conquer 3, Kane's wrath, but you'll need the core game C&C 3 tiberium wars.

what ever RTS you decide to give a shot, take my advice, avoid command and conquer 4 tiberian twilight at all costs
