Okay, I want to play a rts game with my boyfriend. He won't play them because he says they aren't realistic or sound annoying (this is starcraft I). He doesn't like the sounds or that they mine minerals and gas (I guess he wants something realistic?) I want to play more video games with him, but we only play Civilization or other turn-based strategy games together. So, the older the better. I want to try something faster than turn-based with him. Any suggestions?

Try Dawn of War, I had tons of fun with that series (except Soulstorm)...

Uhm...I would say Sins of a Solar Empire but that's quite slow-paced, and has mining asteroids for metal and crystal. Then I could suggest Star Wars Empire at War if he could stand the...sub-par graphics and the intense Star Wars motif.

This. You don't mine minerals, you mine asskicking.

Literally. You get more building points for killing stuff and capturing landmarks, and defending them.

Dark Crusade I would say is the apex of the series.

edit: Small warning however. If he, or you, really gets into it, you may find yourselves randomly shouting BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!! . Don't be alarmed, this is normal.

Though as you can imagine, this may cause some problems in certain public/intimate moments.

Definitely, although DOWII was a good game, it wasn't really even in the same genre.

He likes sub-par graphics. He doesn't like many new games, which limits the ones we can play together. I thought about it, but I can't think of any rts with realistic collection, except maybe warcraft with lumber and gold. But if we are going to play warcraft, we may as well play starcraft because I like it much better. And after turn-based, any rts would be faster.

Company of Heroes for sure. I remember Fallout Tactics being a fun game over a LAN, just try to forget it was ever a Fallout game and it can be fun. No mining in those two and Heroes is pretty realistic.

I would suggest Earth 2160. If he wants realistic combat (I.E: wasting an enemy with 3-4 shots from a gun), and the ability to look through the eyes of a selected unit, this is the game for him.

Rome: Total War might be a definite if he demands realism, although it's partially turn based, only the battles are really real time.

Whenever I played Fallout Tactics, I completely forgot I was playing a Fallout game. Only that I was playing an awesome game ;)

If you have a 360 try Halo Wars. I know it's a simplistic RTS but it worked in getting me into RTS games. Right now that's all I want to play, and just installed the first Starcraft last week for the first time.

I like C&C games myself, still have to mine tiberium (or ore in red alert series...), but they have a fairly wide variety of games. not too realistic though...

I don't know if he would like other types of games. He hasn't ever played my xbox with me. I play a lot of FPS, but I don't know if he would like that. The only thing I've ever seen him play are Duck Hunt and Tetris.

Smack him around and tell him to play broodwar. Honestly it's either that or Age of Empires 2. CnC the older ones are also decent but nothing beats Brood War for old school rts. Seriously just listen to music or something if the sound is sooo annoying. *shrug*

How about Stronghold? The first one was from 2001, so it fits the old criteria. It's not realistic per se, as that would entail months of siege warfare, but it is a rather unique game, and quite fun.
Or Empire Earth, any of the (old) C&C games, or Homeworld?

I would say Command & Conquer Red Alert, but that has mining and other gathering (though you're never really waiting for it to build your next building, as its mostly there to make it so that your army of armored bears doesn't get built in two seconds) as well as it's about as realistic as Pea Wea's playhouse. You can get a laugh out of the outdated and cheesy as hell FMV (Full Motion Video, which is that live action stuff that flooded the market in the lat eighties and early nineties) though. Especially the ones with Stalin.

Command & Conquer 3 is a little better, and it even is pretty realistic, if still a bit silly. Such as there's aliens (called Scrin) that look both cool, and like they belong on an Ed Wood movie at the same time, as well as the main object of interest is a giant green crystal that is infesting the planet (kind of like a cancer, or herpes if you want to be funny) called Tiberium, and we get some freaking awesome techno-bable out of it. There is still harvesting (which is done from the Tiberium), but you never have to scavenge, and you get it fast enough that you're never really waiting for it to arrive.
